WIDS ELECTIONS 2021 ARE HERE
See below for role descriptions

President
As the President of WIDS, it has been a very prestigious experience working with such like-minded, passionate and intellectually-stimulated execs and team members. Generally, the role requires ensuring all execs in the team are happy, able to fulfil their termly targets and ultimately are feeling free to come up with intuitive ideas to spread knowledge of contemporary issues to students. With the Vice-President, I organise team meetings every alternate week to see each team’s updates and upcoming plans. My role is to guide each team on their targets and how to go around doing a task. I also ensure the society admin is up to date as I deal with the requirements of the SU and represent the society in any events on campus.

In terms of the skills for this role, it needs someone who has strong time-organisational, team-working, interpersonal, adaptability and problem-solving skills. These should complement the main requirement of this role which is to have an immense passion and motivation for topics surrounding international development. At the end of the day, the President takes responsibility for the running of the society, ensuring it never deviates from its values.

If you require any more information, please feel free to contact me (Ramyank Chaganty)

Vice President
Being Vice President of WIDs is a really rewarding role, allowing you to take the society in whichever direction you feel is relevant for the field of International Development. In brief, the role requires the organisation of bi-weekly meetings, acting Editor-in-Chief of our magazine -International Observer, monitoring of all teams at WIDs (careers, marketing and talks), working closely with one team in particular and having the initiative to launch new, exciting ideas.

The role requires someone who is well-organised, energetic and motivated, with a deep interest in International Development. Any degree is suited to this role, and it has a lot of scope and potential. It is more important to have genuine commitment and passion for the role, over wanting to it for CV purposes.

If you have any more questions or want to run ideas by me, please feel free to drop me a message! (Cicely Day)

Treasurer
The experience as Treasurer for WIDS has been very rewarding. It’s an important role, where you have to work with different teams and consult with the president and vice president on all budget-related matters. You influence the plans for the upcoming year, the marketing strategy and the “selling strategy” for potential sponsors. But at the same time, it’s independent and you can take on a lot of initiatives. It gave me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone, approach companies, departments within the university and any other potential sponsors with confidence.

You have to be precise in some matters when dealing with funds, but I found there is a lot of support and training from the SU in order to ensure you learn all the details on how to deal with finance-related issues. If you have any questions, please contact me (Ana David)

Talks Director
The Talks Team at WIDS has the exciting opportunity to provide the momentum with which the society explores new avenues within the International Development spectrum. This opportunity entails the responsibility of creating engaging and diverse events for the wider student community, where the students can share and discuss their knowledge and ideas within an open-minded environment. This year, for example, our primary focus was on running round-table discussions based on contemporaneous themes that were globally prevalent and that encapsulated various viewpoints.

As a Talks Director, this constitutes an opportunity to effectively lead on a team to seek and discover unique opportunities through which the International Development conversation on our campus can be furthered. By approaching this role creatively, flexibly and in an efficacious manner you can foster a culture within your team that promotes enthusiasm and self-motivation. Within this role, you really come to realize how pervasive yet impactful International Development is, and it is your challenge to find these hidden realities and to unearth them in an intriguing and enjoyable manner - may that be by collaborating with other societies, or by inviting external guests over! It is up to you and your team to find the best way, and therefore the ideal candidates really ought to have an inherent passion to always take things a step further, both as a leader and as a team member!
If you should have any questions about this experience, you can happily contact me! (Lara Onel)

Careers Director
Your key focus will be to organise career-focused events relating to the development industry. A selection of such events in the past includes a Careers Profiles podcast series, NGO/ID organisation case studies, networking events, CV/application workshops, and more.
Tasks that you will need to complete are likely to involve contacting professionals working at organisations like FCDO, UN, World Bank, NGOs, ESG roles, via email and LinkedIn. You may need to moderate panel events, update the annual Development Careers Handbook, or help coordinate an inter-university careers event collaboration.

From our experiences, the best part of this role is being able to share your passion for development with an inspirational team – a team never afraid to go the extra mile to help out at an event or share ideas about how we can provide the highest quality guests for WIDS members. The WIDS exec team is truly a community, and as Careers Director, your role will be to help guide members to opportunities relating to ID in later life. If you have any further questions please contact us (Mayu Suzuki or Lily Pitcher)

Marketing Director
As marketing officer, you'll have the opportunity of advertising on social media the incredible work the WIDS society is involved with. By promoting talks, the WIDS magazine ‘International Observer’, careers events and handbooks you will have to use your creativity, problem solving and teamwork to make as many students attend the event as you can! You will have the chance to work with incredible team members that you will recruit in term 1. That role is great to spread awareness of International Development, and I really liked the fact that this role allows this to be achieved in numerous creative ways. By launching ‘Good News Mondays’, ‘Suggestions Friday’s and contributing to the magazine I gained many new skills, met likeminded individuals and am subsequently able to say that being WIDS' marketing officer was truly one of the highlights of my second year! If you have any questions about the role please contact me (Adele Henin)

The role is suited to someone who is inherently creative, motivated and confident with our social media platforms (Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook). Previous experience with Canva is useful, but not a prerequisite. If you have any prior work, it would be great to see this. Please send this to the WIDS email at [email protected] .

Admin Director
This year, the role of admin came down to the President and Vice President, but this year we felt it was necessary to have an entire role dedicated to admin. The role involves keeping track of the SU and its new policies, registrations, forms and rules to be able to facilitate the functioning of the society. For any in-person or online events, we need to liaise with the SU in booking rooms, speaker-event approvals, socials and finance issues.

This role requires someone with high organisational, interpersonal communication and team-working skills. Although working with the SU may seem daunting, no prior experience is necessary and there are plenty of training opportunities.

For further information, you can ask Ramyank Chaganty or Cicely Day.
