The Monkey’s Paw by W.W. Jacobs – A fun fundraiser for Halloween!

Join us for a hair-raising fundraising event on Saturday 31st October 2026 where you can hear the tale of The Monkey’s Paw in the spooky settings of The Weaver’s House after dark!

If you had three wishes, what would you wish for? Be careful, as they may come at an enormous cost. This macabre tale of being careful how you play with fate was written in 1902 and has since been adapted into many screen and stage versions.

We are pleased to present this new recorded version by actor Paul Nolan, who has a special family connection with The Weaver’s House. Come and hear this chilling tale whilst warming up with seasonal drinks and nibbles, all whilst raising funds to the upkeep of this unique part of Coventry’s history.

The Monkey’s Paw runs for approximately 35 minutes plus there will be extra paranormal tales of the house from our one of our guides.

Admission is £10 per person and must be booked in advance via [email protected]

This weekend is Heritage Open Days. We are looking forward to showing you around our medieval house and garden.

There’s a tiny house in Spon End where you can walk straight into Coventry in the year 1540.

And this weekend you can visit it completely free.

The Weaver’s House on Upper Spon Street is one of those places loads of people in Coventry have probably passed without ever going inside.

The building is part of a terrace dating back to the 15th century and has been restored to show how Coventry weaver John Croke and his family would have lived and worked nearly 500 years ago.

Inside, it isn’t the story of kings or rich landowners.

It’s the home of an ordinary Coventry working family.

At the back is a recreated medieval garden growing the sorts of plants people used for food, flavouring, medicine and household jobs.

There’ll also be talks about the house and Coventry’s weaving history, with possible spinning and weaving demonstrations during the weekend.

And this weekend is particularly worth knowing about because it marks the end of The Weaver’s House’s public opening season for 2026.

Only the ground floor will be open for Heritage Open Days, so the upstairs room containing the replica loom won’t be accessible this weekend.

I love places like this because Coventry history can get dominated by the Blitz, Lady Godiva and the Cathedral.

But hundreds of years before any of that, ordinary people were living, working and raising families in streets that are still part of the city today.

If you’ve driven or walked through Spon End hundreds of times without really noticing it, The Weaver’s House on Upper Spon Street is one of those genuinely brilliant bits of Coventry hiding in plain sight.

The restored house gives you an idea of how John Croke, a Coventry narrow-loom weaver, and his family would have lived and worked nearly 500 years ago.

Inside, the building has been recreated around everyday Tudor life.

Outside there’s also a working medieval garden filled with plants that would once have been used for food, flavouring, medicine and household jobs.

During the open day there will be talks about Coventry’s weaving history, with weaving and spinning demonstrations also possible during the day.

And this weekend you can go in for nothing.

Coventry gets talked about so much as a post-war city that it’s easy to forget just how much medieval Coventry is still sitting around us.

Spon Street in particular is one of the few places where you can still get a proper glimpse of what the city looked like centuries ago.

Whitefriars Old Ale House, on Gosford Street, is due to reopen. It is one of the city's oldest buildings, dating back to the 14th century and originally served as part of the Whitefriars monastery in the 1300s.

The Whitefriars Old Ale House, on Gosford Street, has reopened after being closed for 10 years.
