Please join us for our next Hearsall Family Science Discussion Club event (all ages welcomed and free entry too!)
When: Monday 23rd March 5pm to 6pm
Topic: "Seeing Sound"
Speaker: Prof Rachel Edwards (University of Warwick)
Where: Hearsall Community Academy Primary School, Coventry
Sometimes we need to see inside something. This could be looking at babies before they are born or finding cracks inside railway tracks. But often the thing we need to look inside is not see through, so how can we do that?
In this talk we will explore how sound can help us see inside objects. We will look at how ultrasound imaging is used in medicine and how similar techniques are used in industry. Then we will turn the idea around and ask an intriguing question. Could we use sight to hear?
This fascinating session will introduce some of the new ways scientists are using sound waves to explore the world around us.

When: Monday 2nd February 5pm-6pm
Topic: "Gravitational waves: What shakes the universe?"
Speaker: Dr Sharmila Balamurugan (University of Warwick)
Where: Centaur Hall
When two stars or blackholes crash into each other, "shock waves" are felt through the universe. Even when Earth is far, far away from these collisions, scientists can detect these waves using sophisticated instruments called "interferometers". There are some interesting questions to ask here. What types of star crashes can we detect from Earth? Why are these shock waves so hard to detect? How are they detected using the interferometers? This talk will answer these questions and some more...
