Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

To finish off we are crushing the notion that doing a Liberal Arts degree means you have to study "everything".

Although some Liberal Arts programmes aim to grant students foundational knowledge across many different subject areas - from art, philosophy and language to history, science and math - at Warwick we provide the ideal balance of focus and freedom, allowing students to tailor their degree to their own unique interests and passions through our routes and pathway options.

We may not have twelve drummers drumming, but we do have twelve disciplinary routes in which you can focus your interests. If none of these appeal to you or you'd like to "go your own way" (to quote Fleetwood Mac!), we'll work with you to create a specialised bespoke pathway through your degree course.

Find out more about how routes and pathways work here https://t.ly/OnVKX

For the eleventh day of Christmas we are introducing you to another member of our team - Dr Lauren Bird.

Lauren is the Director of our MASc in Community, Engagement, and Belonging, and teaches on a number of our undergraduate and postgraduate modules, including 'Quantitative Methods for Undergraduate Research' and 'The Good Life: Flourishing and Belonging Within Communities'. Her research incorporates multiple disciplines - from social epidemiology, demography and sociology - to investigate health and child development.

It's now the tenth day of and today we are focusing on our unique Liberal Arts Venice programme.

Did you know that Warwick Liberal Arts is the only Liberal Arts programme in the UK to feature annual onsite summer teaching in Venice?

The programme consists of two intensive modules taught in Venice every summer, with Liberal Arts students having priority access to both. On these modules, you'll meet other students from around the world and come together to think critically about super-wicked problems facing both Venice and the world today: sustainability, rising tides, over tourism, gentrification, and more, whilst also considering grassroots resistance movements to these global problems.

We'll use Venice and its lagoon as a floating classroom, with onsite activities and field trips to provide a one-of-a-kind unforgettable educational experience.

Find out more about our exciting Venice programme here https://t.ly/NJu7e

22/12/2023

On the ninth day of we are putting the spotlight on our MASc in Community, Engagement, and Belonging.

This course teaches you how to use a multidisciplinary approach when creating methods for purposeful change within local and global communities. On this course, students are empowered to develop into intellectual and community leaders who will bring future hubs of knowledge creation—such as universities, think tanks, community groups, religious organisations, and industry—into meaningful dialogue with the global communities they serve.

We have partnered with world-renowned Liberal Arts programmes in Europe and Canada to allow you to broaden your educational horizons and gain an international perspective on Liberal Education around the world. We also run our popular Venice programme, where students can optionally study two intensive courses in Venice.

It's the sixth day of and we are bringing you everything you need to know about our Beauty module.

What is beauty? Is it something objective and transcendent, true for all time, or does its meaning rely entirely on the context of the historical period, culture or society?

The problem of beauty has been debated for thousands of years—from Aristotle's exploration of what makes poetry beautiful to Keats' Romantic equation of Beauty and Truth in the early nineteenth century, from modern day debates on celebrity culture and social media to socially-constructed approaches that see beauty as an expression of the patriarchy.

In this module we encourage students to look at beauty critically and discuss how it has impacted society—from theological approaches to inner beauty as a form of transcendence to the problem of the "beauty bias" in reinforcing social, racial, and gender inequality. We analyse a wide range of case studies from Renaissance portraiture to social media and fast fashion.

Is Liberal Arts a new field of study?

The correct answer is that Liberal Arts is nothing new - in fact, it is considered one of the oldest forms of education, acting as the primary form of study across European universities during the medieval period.

On the third day of we are introducing some of our team, starting with Bryan!

Bryan is the Head of our Liberal Arts department and teaches on some of our modules such as Truth and Misinformation and Beauty. He also leads our Venice programme, where students have the option to study in Venice and use their Liberal Arts education to confront Venice's global challenges.

Find out more about Bryan and his research here https://t.ly/szvNo and be sure to check out the University of Warwick Instagram () stories to hear him speak about our Venice programme!

For our Second Day of we'll be discussing what our Truth & Misinformation module is all about!

This core first-year module introduces students to a set of modern topical issues around truth and misinformation today; exposing you to practical considerations and consequences of certain positions, while also inviting critical and creative responses from multiple academic approaches.

Rather than providing a definition or a ready-made model of truth or misinformation, students will be equipped with the tools to reflect and define their own approach to these concepts. Some of the complex questions we explore include:

- Is truth socially constructed and dependent on context or is truth universal?
- Is there one central truth or multiple conflicting versions of truth?
- What sources of information are trustworthy and how do we know?

Find out more about this fascinating topic here https://t.ly/eAA-4

We are doing this Christmas to tell you everything you need to know about studying Liberal Arts at University of Warwick. Starting with one of our most frequently asked questions - what is Liberal Arts?

A Liberal Arts education teaches students critical thinking and innovative problem-solving skills —from a wide range of academic disciplines — to address the most pressing challenges of the day. It is rooted in a tradition of learning and leadership that goes back to Ancient Greece, with methods of study that combined multiple disciplines into the arts of astronomy, arithmetic, geometry, rhetoric, grammar, logic and music in order to pursue a “desire for a universal understanding." In the Renaissance, Liberal Education transformed into the Studia Humanitatis, with a strong emphasis on learning to improve civic society.

Today, Liberal Arts education can include a wide range of subjects (all the natural sciences, social sciences, arts, humanities, and more), and seeks to foster rigorous critical thinking to creatively address the greatest challenges of tomorrow.
