Update on my recent post on the Oliver McGowan mandatory training on learning disability and autism

Health Education England recently confirmed that the National Autistic Society and Gloucester Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust are the new delivery partners. However, my understanding is that the full rollout will still take time

The Health and Care Act, 2022 requires settings to provide training for their staff in learning disability and autism, including how to interact appropriately with autistic people and people who have a learning disability. This should be at a level appropriate to their role

Whilst Oliver’s training is the preferred method, the only specific requirements are:

- training should be structured to use the two Core Capabilities (Learning Disability and Autism) Frameworks and include interactive learning where the learner can consider how to apply their learning in their specific role

- the training should include input from people with lived experience, ideally by being delivered by people who are autistic and / or have a learning disability

I am offering free introductory sessions on learning disability and autism from early 2024. If, in the meantime you want to chat about the requirements for mandatory training, or how I can help your team, please drop me a DM

Person- centred support is a given for individuals with learning disabilities and cerebral palsy, addressing their unique needs and enhancing their quality of life. Embracing and “owning” your professional development is the key to delivering such tailored support with confidence and expertise

In support work, truly “owning” your development goes far beyond attending your mandatory training. It’s about actively seeking fresh resources and consistently developing skills, rather than just passively consuming assigned materials

Through personal development, support workers can deeply understand and tailor their approach, leading to truly transformative support. Person-centred support builds trust, facilitates daily routines and improves the emotional well-being of individuals you support

To truly ‘own’ your professional role, you can start by:

🩵 Setting clear learning goals
🩵 Diving into specialised workshops
🩵 Engaging with relevant online communities and forums
🩵 Actively seeking feedback from colleagues and those you support

Embracing personal ownership in your professional growth can have a profound impact on the lives of those with learning disabilities and cerebral palsy. Every step you take towards development enriches care quality, so start today!

What sound brings you most joy?

Bird song? Your children laughing? Someone saying “I love you”?

For the 40% of individuals with a learning disability who also experience some degree of hearing loss, many of these beautiful sounds are lost, (Mencap, 2021)

What’s more, according to the BMJ, most people with a learning disability who have hearing loss have never been tested, (2019)

Rachel Barber and I are excited to launch an inclusive, empowering training package. "Learning Disability and Hearing Loss” is designed to open up a new world of sound for individuals with a learning disability and hearing loss. Our collaborative project will signpost individuals, their families, teams and carers to access diagnostic services, consider types of communication and technologies available and create robust care plans which support effective communication

To find out more, check out the new blog on my website, www.montgomerysimpsoncaretraining.com or please get in touch

And keep listening to those sounds which bring you joy! 💛
