Today is World Alzheimer's Day 💙

Dementia is now the leading cause of death in the UK, and for anyone working in a care setting it shapes daily practice more than almost anything else.

Good dementia training changes how a team works. It shifts the focus from managing behaviour to understanding what's behind it. It helps staff communicate in ways that reduce distress rather than increase it. And it protects the dignity of people who deserve to be treated as themselves, not as their diagnosis.

Benedict Blythe was five years old.

He died from anaphylaxis at school in December 2021. His parents, Helen and Peter, spent four years campaigning so that no other family would go through the same thing.

This month, that campaign became law.

Their foundation's own research found that 69% of English schools didn't have all the recommended allergy safeguards in place. Half held no spare lifesaving allergy medication at all. One in four provided no training to help staff recognise the symptoms of a reaction.

Benedict's Law changes that. From September 2026, every member of school staff in England must be trained to recognise an allergic reaction and know what to do next.

We've made our Anaphylaxis and Allergy Awareness training available online so it's straightforward for whole teams to complete, with further allergy courses coming soon.

This is training that exists because of one family's determination. It's worth doing properly.

Understanding autism properly matters. Recognising that a meltdown isn't misbehaviour. Knowing that sensory environments can be overwhelming in ways that aren't obvious. Understanding that communication differences aren't a lack of understanding.

It's National Inclusion Week 💙 and this year's theme is Build Trust, Navigate Change.

In nurseries, schools and care settings, inclusion isn't a policy document. It's whether a child who communicates differently gets heard. Whether a resident with dementia is still spoken to as an adult. Whether a new member of staff feels able to ask a question they think they should already know the answer to.

Training plays a part in all of that. Not because a certificate creates an inclusive culture, but because knowledge gives people the confidence to do the right thing when it isn't obvious.

Worth a conversation with your team this week, whatever else is on the agenda.

Epilepsy affects around 1 in 100 people in the UK — which means most nurseries, schools and care settings will encounter it. Knowing how to respond calmly, keep someone safe during a seizure and recognise when it becomes an emergency is knowledge worth having before you need it.

Today is Emergency Services Day 💙 A moment to recognise everyone who answers the call when it matters most.

It's also a good reminder of something we talk about a lot in our First Aid training: in those first few minutes before help arrives, the person best placed to make a difference is whoever is already in the room.

That's what first aid training is really for. Not replacing the emergency services — but bridging the gap until they get there.
