Again taken from another instructors post but very true and something to think about……
THE REALITY OF LEARNING TO DRIVE
Before you decide to start learning to drive, take a moment to think about a few important truths.
You are learning to control a powerful machine.
Used correctly, it gives freedom and independence. Used carelessly or without understanding, it can cause serious injury or even tragedy. Respect what you are learning to handle.
Learning to drive takes time, patience and practice.
It is not a quick or cheap process. Developing coordination, awareness and judgement takes repetition and focus until those skills become instinctive.
You carry real responsibility behind the wheel.
As the driver, you are legally accountable for the vehicle, yourself and everyone around you. Being a learner does not remove that duty and it does not protect you from the law if something goes wrong.
Know your theory, it is not just a test.
The theory test is not a hurdle to get out of the way. It is the foundation of safe driving. Study properly, aim high and understand what you are learning. Knowledge saves lives.
Progress is not a race.
Everyone learns differently. Do not compare your journey to others and do not lose motivation if yours takes longer. The goal is not to finish first, it is to be confident and safe for life.
Trust your instructor.
Friends and family mean well, but your instructor’s advice is based on current laws, modern training and professional experience. Listen, ask questions and work together. They will know when you are ready for test day.
Passing the test is only the beginning.
A pass certificate means you are safe enough to keep learning alone, not that you have mastered it all. Real experience comes with time, reflection and continued awareness.
Driving is a lifelong skill. Respect it, work at it and enjoy the journey.
Taken from another post I e seen but makes perfect sense……
Things you don’t realise about dual controls in a driving instructor car:
The controls allow us to aid with the clutch if need be and stop the car if a pupil is going to fast, we have no control over the brake if the pupil brakes too hard, we can only tell them to come off the brake!
If they suddenly stall at traffic lights or in slow moving traffic, the car will just jolt to a stop, there will be no brake lights, the car will stop dead, if you are tailgating the Learner odds are you will drive into the back of us!
With regards to beeping the horn when a pupil stalls, there is generally a brief pause before the pupil moves off, this is due to the pupil getting a “brain freeze”, the instructor then has to either intervene or talk the pupil through the moving off procedure, not made easier by some impatient human beeping the horn, making the pupil even more nervous and self conscious!
You may say pupils shouldn’t be in traffic if they can’t handle the pressure, we move them in stages and situations they can deal with for eg, we make sure they have full control of the car controls before we introduce any traffic and situations outside the car BUT because they are learning they do sometimes have a hiccup and mess up that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be on the road they are on!
If a player misses a kick in the match ,be sure to boo him and call for him to be pulled off the pitch, he obviously shouldn’t make a mistake like that with his experience and total lack of nerves under pressure!
Please be patient we will be out of your way soon as is safe to do so !
For the ones that show immense patience behind us we don’t always get to thank you but I promise you it never goes unnoticed.
