Our talented architecture students have just clinched the top prize at the national Design Concrete 2023 competition! Architecture students Aakriti Kharel, Rio Toyoda and Mohammad Zahidi were teamed up with architectural technology student Harry Greenhalgh and tasked with entering Design Concrete 2023, which encourages architecture students to explore the benefits of designing sustainably with concrete.

Their visionary design, Crane's Fen, was designed to transform a former quarry into a haven of sustainability and biodiversity. With features like water droplet-inspired voids for natural light and a café for bird feeding, pond dipping, and more, the judges of the competition said that they "demonstrated excellent sensitivity to the site context from concept to detailed design".

Our new Delia Derbyshire building is going to be a hub of creative ideas and collaboration. We have designed the building to help showcase our students' work to the wider community, both local and global. What would you like to see showcased here?

Our new Delia Derbyshire building in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities may have some truly inspiring technology for our students to work with but it doesn't mean we can't acknowledge the past too.

These panels feature a design directly drawn from the old jacquard loom cards which produced complex ribbon designs.

These loom cards are an important predecessor to computer punch-cards - looms were 'programmed' with a variety of complex designs in Coventry's booming ribbon industry in the 19th century.

Court is in session! Drama and journalism students from our faculty worked with students from other areas of the university to create an immersive mock criminal law case. Our drama students acted in crime scenes and on the witness stand, while journalism students reported on the case.

Alan East, the Associate Head of School (Student Experience) spearheaded the project: “Providing our students with hands-on, industry-relevant experience is crucial to their development in all of their respective professions, so the opportunity to utilise our diverse faculties and cutting-edge facilities to enable a collaboration like this was a no-brainer.”

We were joined by acclaimed actor to reveal the winning statue in a competition run by the Gallery of Living History, a non-profit organisation he founded with our Chancellor Margaret Casely-Hayford and others. Schoolchildren were challenged to nominate subjects for the untold stories of history and to come up with statue designs linked to those stories. The winning design now sits in our own Starley Gardens. When asked about the Gallery of Living History’s aim to explore, debate and examine the context of our history and culture, Andy Serkis said: “Bringing history alive in 360 degrees for everyone – that is our goal.”

The winner of the statue competition was Sidney Stringer Academy, with their design Peace, Equality, Unity and Acceptance. The teams behind the twelve shortlisted designs were given support by our faculty - including on what materials to use and how to carry out historical research - and their work is being brought to life on screens in collaboration with our students.
