Myth – ‘people with a learning disability cannot live a long life!’

Sinead shares reasons why some people do not get to live a long, healthy life – that people need to see beyond the learning disability and not dismiss symptoms. Plus a reminder that for anyone with a learning disability, over 14 years, they are entitled to free annual health checks. Spread the word!

Carers Week 2026 | Celebrating Compassion, Partnership & Person-Centred Care 💙

This Carers Week, we recognise the incredible contribution of carers across health and social care. From dedicated support workers and care professionals to unpaid family carers supporting loved ones every day.

Carers bring far more than practical support. They bring:

✔ Compassion
✔ Empowerment
✔ Trust
✔ Connection
✔ Advocacy
✔ Person-centred understanding

Good care is not just about tasks, it is about relationships, listening, understanding and recognising the individual behind the care plan.

Across the UK, millions of unpaid carers support family members, friends, and neighbours, often balancing caring responsibilities alongside work, education, and their own wellbeing.

Recent figures estimate there are around 5.8 million unpaid carers in the UK, contributing care valued at approximately £184 billion each year. Equivalent to a second NHS! Just allow that to sink in.

At Coventry Training Consortium, we believe high-quality training helps create safer, more inclusive, and person-centred services.

That includes:

• Working in partnership with families and carers
• Understanding communication needs
• Promoting dignity and inclusion

The Triangle of Care highlights the importance of involving carers/family members as equal partners in care, recognising that families, unpaid carers and care professionals often know the person best and provide essential insight into their needs and wellbeing.

This Sunday is day.

Tourette’s is often misunderstood.

Many people still think Tourette Syndrome is simply swearing, but coprolalia (involuntary swearing or socially inappropriate words) affects only a minority of people with Tourette’s, estimated at around 10–15%.

Tourette’s is a complex neurodevelopmental condition, and many people also experience co-occurring conditions such as ADHD, OCD, anxiety and autism.

Recent conversations around the film I Swear, highlighted both the realities of living with Tourette’s and the challenges society still faces in responding with understanding rather than judgement. The irony of a film created to build empathy becoming the centre of controversy following the BAFTA awards shows just how much awareness is still needed.

This Tourette’s Awareness Day, let’s move beyond stereotypes and focus on acceptance, compassion and understanding for neurodivergent people and the many different ways they experience the world.
