PERSEPHONE: THE STORY SHE MIGHT HAVE TOLD…
At 1.06am tomorrow morning we reach the Autumn Equinox - Mabon - when day and night stand briefly in balance before the darkness begins winning the argument.
Traditionally, this is when Persephone begins her descent into the Underworld.
The old story tells us that she was dragged down there by Hades against her will, leaving behind sunshine, flowers and her understandably distraught mother.
But what if Persephone were a modern woman?
What if she took one look at her rather sugary-sweet life above ground, all floaty dresses, flower arranging and being somebody’s dutiful daughter - and thought, “Is this it?”
Then along comes Hades. Dark. Smouldering. Mysterious. King of an entire realm. And, most importantly, prepared to offer her a throne rather than ask her to make the tea.
Perhaps she didn’t need rescuing after all. Perhaps she read the small print, negotiated six months above ground, six months below, and secured the right to return every spring in a blaze of blossom before heading back to reign beside a gorgeous king who adored her.
Sunshine and flowers for half the year.
Power, passion and her own kingdom for the other half.
Frankly, it sounds less like an abduction and more like an extremely successful midlife renegotiation.
As we reach the point of balance between light and dark, perhaps Persephone’s modern message is this:
You don’t always have to cling to the life everyone expects you to want. Sometimes the darkness isn’t where we disappear.
Sometimes it’s where we discover our throne.
