Little Tree Woodland School At Little Tree Forest School we believe children learn best through self-motivated play and exploration.

Little Tree is run by Fe Hill, Laura Clayton, Sammy Brown, Chloe Elliott and Miranda Vesely, providing creative woodland experiences in the Falmouth and Penryn area for children aged 3-7. To support this, children are given plentiful opportunities for free-play as well as experiences of tool use and cooking.We aspire to provide children with authentic experiences through which they can begin to un

derstand themselves and their relationship to the world around them. Our sessions aim to fascinate and inspire and to encourage independence, in order to help build children’s self-confidence and feed their imagination. We recognise the importance of the holistic development of the child, and lead by example, teaching children the value of friendship and of working together cooperatively. A creative, loving and joyful child is more equipped to gain and share knowledge and to be less afraid of mistakes. .

Our theme in the woods this week was Sea Shanties 🏴‍☠️⛵️🎶
The children enjoyed sharing their experiences and stories about listening to sea shanties before learning a pirate themed version of The Wellerman Song. We played some songs on a speaker for the children to listen to whilst painting, while others carefully whittled their own drumsticks to use in a rhythm game.

The children also created a special Father’s Day gift and took great care wrapping it up and practised their name writing skills

And for snack, the children enjoyed delicious peanut butter apple boats. And a special treat for filling up their ‘Kindness Jar’.

The theme in the woods last week was minibeasts 🕷️🪲🐞🐌
The children took part in some Big Yoga, played a bug-themed game of Who Am I?, and enjoyed cheering on snails in a race!
We also had a special celebration on Wednesday for Fe’s birthday, with a small party that included pass the parcel, cake, and music 🎂

Last week in the woods, the children explored the wonderful theme of butterflies 🦋 Some enjoyed a butterfly hunt around the woods, searching for different species hidden throughout the area before working together to tally their findings. Others got creative, making colourful butterflies using paper towels, food colouring, and pipettes.

Some children made delicious leaf cakes over the fire, while others transformed into superheroes by designing and creating their own masks and wristbands.

This week in the woods was all about bees 🐝
The children had a wonderful time taking part in the nectar game, working together in teams to collect “nectar” with pipettes for their queen bee (AKA Sammy and Fe!) They also made their own bee hotels to take home.

Some children created beautiful beehive pictures using paint and bubble wrap, while others enjoyed making colourful woodland-inspired paintings. The children also used clay and natural materials found in the woods to create their own bees.

Our Wednesday children enjoyed watching our Little Tree documentary, inspired by David Attenborough.

Last week in the woods we discussed how we can take care of the planet and of each other. The children explored the importance of friendship and kindness by creating a friendship banner, listening to a friendship story and enjoying a puppet show about looking out for one another. They also took part in a parachute game which encouraged turn taking, and teamwork.

As part of our discussions about caring for the planet, the children shared ideas about how we can help the environment and made their own “planet pledges.” They worked hard on our vegetable patch, helped to develop our pond area and created a bug hotel !

Last week in the woods, we celebrated the incredible David Attenborough turning 100! The children shared everything they already knew about David and the many wonderful programmes he has created over the years.

We enjoyed a range of animal-themed activities, including a habitat game where the children flew, ran, and swam their way to different habitats. Chloe did some fantastic face paintings, and we also watched clips from David’s nature documentaries together.

The children then became filmmakers themselves, working together to create their very own wildlife documentary! Some children had a turn using the phone camera on a tripod, operating the clapperboard, and speaking to the camera about the different species found in our woods.

This week in the woods, we celebrated May Day. After learning about the Green Man, the children got creative, making their own “green people” on the trees using clay and a variety of natural materials.

Following another Cornish tradition, some of the children designed and made their own Obby Oss!

To finish the week, the children created a mini maypole and enjoyed dancing together around our very own tree-maypole.

They also explored spring-themed stories, learned the traditional song “Hal A Tow,” and enjoyed foraged bread as a snack.

Last week in the woods, we continued exploring our dinosaur theme. The children used story props to create their own imaginative dinosaur tales, showing wonderful creativity and confidence. Others joined in enthusiastically, singing along to “10 Little Dinosaurs Jumping on the Bed.”

Some children engaged in sensory play by making mud volcanoes, carefully moving their dinosaur toys to safety as the “lava” flowed!

It has also been lovely to see the children sharing their own dinosaur stories from home 📚🦕🌋

This week in the woods, our focus was all about dinosaurs! The children began by sharing what they already knew, sparking a lively discussion about how big dinosaurs were, which ones could run the fastest, which could fly, and exploring ideas about why they became extinct.

They worked together to sort different dinosaurs into groups, identifying which dinosaurs were carnivores and which were herbivores. Some children enjoyed Dino themed yoga and dancing, bringing movement and imagination into their play.

Excitement grew when the children discovered a mysterious dinosaur egg hidden in the woods, creating lots of wonder and questions. But who could it belong to?! 🦖🦕
