Mediation gives neighbours the opportunity to talk through their concerns with the support of an impartial mediator.
It’s not about deciding who is right or wrong. Instead, we help both sides:
💬explain what has been happening from their point of view
💬listen to and understand each other’s concerns
💬explore possible solutions
💬agree practical ways to move forward

In mediation, naming a feeling isn’t about being “emotional” it’s about being clear.
Most people enter conflict carrying a swirl of reactions they haven’t put words to yet. When those feelings stay unnamed, they leak out as tone, defensiveness, assumptions, or blame.
But when someone says, “I’m feeling tense… frustrated… unsure… hurt…” things can shift.
Naming a feeling brings the nervous system down a level. It separates the emotion inside you from the story about the other person. And it creates a moment of honesty.
Some people may not be able to express their emotions clearly, so we work with them to describe what is happening for them in their physiology or sensory experience and validate their preferences as part of the process.

Most conflict starts with how we describe the situation. We interpret the meaning behind someone's behaviour, filling in the gaps with assumptions and adding labels to the other person.
What we think happened becomes a story, not an observation.
There is a world of difference between what I saw, heard and felt and what I decided it meant.
When we lead with judgement and interpretation, the other person can hear; you're wrong, you are the problem, you have failed, you are no good . .
Their nervous system reacts to the judgement.
An observation can create solid ground to build on. i.e. rather than Susan was really rude to me! - Susan raised her voice when she asked me why I hadn't done the work on time.
Ask yourself;

What did I observe?
What specifically happened?
What is relevant to the here and now?

When in conflict people often want to get their point across and get other people ‘on side’ which might involve over explaining.

The key is gauging the reactions of others.

It is easy to blurt out information and waffle when feeling tense. Check in with yourself to remain grounded before saying what you want to say and pause.

You may feel the urge to interrupt and inform people of something that you relate to. Before you do that, consider how helpful it is in the context of this conversation.

Straightforward communication is clear and to the point while maintaining care for the relationship.

As a Mediator I often think “That’s a great answer, but to a different question”.

About 70% of communication is filled with blocks to dialogue, meaning that conversations (and meetings) take far too long and don’t add much value.

𝐁𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞. I see this in Mediations all the time. When someone is passive, they are avoiding accountability and others can become increasingly frustrated causing tension to escalate.

𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠. This is a way of shutting down the conversation because you do not feel valued or heard. ‘Yes, but the policy doesn’t say that we have to do that’.

𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠. This happens a lot more than you might realise, try and notice when you respond to what you think they mean rather than what they said. We speak at a social and psychological level, rarely do people admit to the psychological level.

𝐓𝐨𝐨 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥. This can be exhausting, and meaning can get lost.

𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠.The tendency to exaggerate creates a lack of relevance.

We develop these habits over time and if we can become aware of how they impact good conversations we can adapt.
