📚🦉 Picture books aren’t just for little ones!🦉📚

Did you know that picture books can be absolutely brilliant for children of all ages?

For younger children, they help develop vocabulary, listening skills, imagination and a love of stories.

For older children, picture books are just as valuable! They can spark wonderful discussions, develop inference skills, explore emotions and inspire some fabulous writing. The illustrations provide clues, encourage children to look more closely and help them read between the lines.

✨ Sometimes, the simplest stories lead to the biggest learning opportunities!

Don’t put those picture books away just because your child is getting older. Share a story and see where the conversation takes you!

My recommendation is Voices in the Park by Anthony Browne. I use this book with children of various ages because of the multi- layered approach it uses. In typical Anthony Browne style, the illustrations are fantastic and are a great point for discussion. Highly recommended! 🦉📚

Today is World Migratory Bird Day so I have created some resources to help teach children about birds and how some of them migrate. There’s an information booklet, poster and reading comprehension and writing prompts.

🦉🍦 Do you see the queue or the ice-cream? 🍦🦉

Sometimes there are obstacles put in our path which have to be overcome. I have SO many conversations with children about keeping the end goal in mind. In this case, Featherby has the ice-cream in sight. 🍦🦉🍦

Equally, for your child, it could be a learning goal. Keeping that goal in sight and working towards it is the road to success.

Focusing on the six key learning skills will help your child to practise the things that will make the most difference to their progress and confidence.

🧩 A difficult puzzle to solve? 🧩

What is the problem here? Too many pieces? Too many similar pieces? Not enough time? Not knowing where to start?

This is how learning can often feel for children.

The main problem here is the lack of a clear outcome- there is no picture to show what is expected. Without a clear goal, children do not have the understanding of what is expected.

When I teach, I always make the outcome clear. We then make a plan with small, manageable steps to achieve it. This way, children make progress and become confident learners.

🦉🤩 About Featherby’s Learning Flock 🤩🦉

Featherby’s Learning Flock is a membership which offers maths and English activities for children aged around 7 to 11 years old. The activities are all based around Featherby the owl and his adventures. They are fun and engaging and are designed to be completed in smaller , manageable steps- a real difference can be made by doing just 10 minutes of practice per day. 🦉

The Featherby activities provide practice of the six key learning skills which enable children to gain in confidence and make great progress. These skills are: reading fluency and comprehension; writing for different purposes; grammar, vocabulary and spelling; times tables; mental maths; and maths reasoning and problem solving.

I design all the resources myself and try them out when I teach my students. I love creating materials that I am proud to use myself and I know they work. 😀
These activities are accessed via an online learning portal. There are brand new activities every month based around a monthly theme and regular competitions with certificates up for grabs. I will also be adding extra videos which offer hints and tips to help children with their learning.

Featherby’s Learning Flock is in its early stages so it is still developing. I want to create an online community which supports children’s learning alongside school and tutoring sessions. I am so, so excited to grow it and help as many parents and children as I can.
