Have you ever tried watching a movie in English to practice, felt completely lost after five minutes, turned on subtitles, and then realized you were just reading instead of listening?
I’ve been there, and so have my students! Today, I’m sharing my
technique that actually trains your brain to understand natural spoken English—without the frustration. It’s called the 3-Pass Method. Here is exactly how to do it!"
Step 1: Watch in Your Native Language First
"Step one: Pick a short scene—just 2 to 3 minutes long! Watch it first in your native language.
Why? Because your brain needs context. When you already know the plot, who is speaking, and what is happening, you remove the stress of trying to understand the story. Now, your brain is 100% free to focus purely on language."
Step 2: Watch with English Subtitles
"Step two: Watch the exact same scene again, but this time, switch the audio to English and turn on English subtitles.
This is your connection phase. You are linking the sounds you hear to the written words on the screen. Look out for connected speech, new vocabulary, and how native speakers shorten words. Pay attention to how the expressions match what you already know happened in Step 1."
Step 3: Watch in English Without Subtitles
"Step three: The moment of truth! Turn off the subtitles completely and watch the scene in English one last time.
Because you already know the story and you’ve seen the written text, your ears will naturally pick up words they missed before. It feels like a superpower when you realize: 'Hey, I actually understood that!
Let me know in the comments how much more you understood on Step😀
