Savasana or relaxation -

I recently listened to an inspiring yoga podcast on this subject and thought I would share some thoughts.

Our yoga practice always ends with relaxation. We have done the physical bit - this is where we practice stillness and our nervous system moves from active to passive. It’s a bit like ‘clearing the slate’ and having a fresh start

It takes time to ‘get good’ at it and often we meet challenges -

Physical - it’s important to get comfortable. A bolster under the knees, a blanket under our neck, keeping warm or an eye mask can help .

Mental - it’s hard to be still with our minds. Some days our brains are restless. It’s completely normal for thoughts to arise and it’s ok to let them pass.

Every day is different and some days we can relax better than others. It is a journey as we learn to train our nervous system over time .

Savasana helps to balance life, reduces anxiety and stress and improves sleep.

Leave class feeling refreshed and calm

The most important pose of your practice - would love to hear your thoughts x

Happy September- my favourite month.
It’s the in betweeen season - the end of summer and Autumn is just not here yet .

A great time to quietly focus on your health and fitness goals without the pressure of the New Year- a gentle reset.

Time to get back or to start a regular fitness routine - a weekly( or more!) yoga class, hitting your 10000 steps every day, including some strength training a few times a week .

What do you need to do to ?

Start slow and ease yourself Into the last few months of the year with some realistic goals.
I am a great believer that you need to find exercise you love and you will stick with it . ❤️🧘‍♂️💪🏼

Look forward to you all joining me at classes next week. Barbara x

Feel the stress leave your body while your mind becomes quiet - give it a try.

You wake up already thinking about what needs to be done.

Before your feet touch the floor, there may be messages to answer, news to absorb, people who need something, and a schedule that already feels too full.

Then the rushing begins.

You move quickly through the morning, brace against traffic, carry tension into work, eat while distracted, jump from one demand to the next, and tell yourself you will finally relax once everything is finished.

But everything is never finished.

By evening, your jaw is still tight. Your shoulders are still raised. Your breathing is still shallow. You may be sitting on the couch, but part of your body is still working, scanning, anticipating, and preparing for whatever comes next.

The most dangerous part is how normal this can feel.

When you have lived in a hurried state for long enough, stress stops feeling like stress. It starts feeling like your personality, your work ethic, or simply what adulthood requires.

You may not realize how activated you are until you become exhausted, irritable, unable to sleep, unusually hungry, mentally foggy, or strangely incapable of slowing down even when you finally have the chance.

The stress response itself is not the enemy. It helps the body mobilize energy, raise alertness, and respond to immediate demands.

The damage begins when the body is repeatedly activated without enough opportunity to recover.

Researchers describe the cumulative wear created by prolonged or poorly resolved stress as allostatic load. Over time, this burden can affect cardiovascular, metabolic, immune, and hormonal regulation, contributing to higher blood pressure, disrupted sleep, inflammation, and difficulty regulating blood sugar.

This is where long-lived cultures offer a radically different model.

People in the Blue Zones experience stress too. Their lives are not free from grief, responsibility, uncertainty, or hardship.

But they tend to have reliable rituals that help them shed some of that stress throughout the day.

This practice is called downshifting.

In Okinawa, it may be remembering ancestors. In Sardinia, it may be gathering with friends. In Ikaria, it may be an afternoon rest. In other long-lived communities, recovery is supported by prayer, gardening, shared meals, time outdoors, movement, laughter, or a familiar ritual that marks the transition from work into rest.

The details differ, but the biological message is similar:

The threat has passed.

You can come down now.

These moments do not need to be dramatic or lengthy to matter. Research on short breaks suggests that even brief pauses during demanding work can reduce accumulated strain and support well-being.

Relaxation and slow-breathing practices have also been shown to increase parasympathetic activity, reduce physiological arousal, and improve mood, helping the body shift out of a continuously activated state.

Modern life teaches us to endure stress until the weekend, the vacation, the evening glass of wine, or the day when the schedule finally becomes easier.

Blue Zone life teaches something more protective:

Do not wait until the end of the day to recover from the day.

Release some of it as you go.

Step outside after a tense meeting. Walk for five minutes without carrying your phone. Take several slow breaths before opening the next message. Eat one meal without a screen. Tend a plant. Stretch your shoulders. Sit in the sun. Speak with someone who makes you feel safe. Create a simple ritual that tells your body work is over.

Most importantly, begin by noticing.

Notice the jaw you have been clenching.

The breath you have been holding.

The urgency you feel when nothing urgent is actually happening.

The exhaustion beneath the productivity.

That awareness is not a small thing. It is the moment chronic stress stops being an invisible force controlling your day and becomes a state you can influence.

You may not have the power to remove every pressure from your life.

But you do have the power to interrupt the pattern, help your body return to safety, and practice coming down before stress becomes the place you live.

Follow along for more practical, natural steps to slow biological aging and live a longer, fuller life.
