Before beginning detailed work on a piece, establish its structure clearly in your mind.
Where do the principal ideas begin and end? Where does the musical character change? Does earlier material return?
A clear understanding of form gives direction to the entire study process. It reveals the relationship between the individual sections, supports memory and phrasing, and prevents the music from being approached as a succession of unrelated bars.
Structure is not a theoretical label to be added after a piece has been learned. It is one of the foundations on which the interpretation and study of the work are built.
The score shown here is Genary Korganov’s Arabesque, Op. 6 No. 6, selected for the ISoM Piano Grade 6 repertoire as part of my work as a Piano Subject Matter Specialist at the International School of Musicians.
The complete Grade 6 book is available to download free of charge from ISoM. Further details are available on request.
