Congratulations to Essex PhD graduate Dr Jakub Kowalewski, who has been named a BBC New Generation Thinker.

The initiative seeks to find some of the UK’s most promising early-career academics. Dr Kowalewski, now Senior Research Fellow at St Mary’s University, explores in his research how religious ideas can help us address societal problems.

The news follows Dr Sarah Smyth of our Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies, who has spent the last year as part of the New Generation Thinker programme.

An Essex academic will be helping the European Union to assess the risks and impacts of artificial intelligence.

Professor Haris Mouratidis, Director of the Institute for Analytics and Data Science (IADS) at Essex, is one of the independent experts appointed to the European Union’s AI Act Scientific Panel.

The experts on the panel will support the implementation and oversight of this landmark legal framework for AI.
