Huge congratulations to my incredible Year 9 student, Oscar who has just won the Intermediate Piano Competition at The Ipswich School for the second year in a row! πŸŽΉπŸ†

To win this competition once is an achievement, but to come back and win it again demonstrates remarkable commitment and maturity as a young musician.

I’m so proud of everything he’s accomplished and excited to see where his musical journey takes him next. Keep up the fantastic work Oscar! πŸ‘πŸŽΆ

Teaching piano is one of the greatest joys of my life β€” not because I teach scales, arpeggios, or exam pieces, but because I teach people.πŸ§β€β™‚οΈπŸ§πŸ§β€β™€οΈπŸ§β€β™‚οΈπŸ§πŸ§β€β™€οΈ

No two students that I teach are are the same. And that’s exactly how it should be.πŸ‘

My students range from 6 years old to 81 years young. Some arrive bursting with energy, barely able to reach the pedals. Others arrive with decades of life experience, finally giving themselves permission to learn something they’ve always dreamed of. Some want to work towards grades. Others simply want to play the music they love. 🎹

Every student is different.

Every lesson is different.

Every journey is different.

This half term seems to be flying by. These are a few highlights of my half term.

🎹 A young pianist learning "Hes A Pirate" even with a broken finger! We have had to change the fi*****ng!

🎹 A year 7 pianist learning the intro to Elton Johns' "Im still standing"

🎹 A year 6 pianist coming to her lessons every week making the most amazing progress between her lessons.

🎹 An adult pianist performing with musicality and colour.

First week back teaching after the Christmas break. It’s been a very wet, cold and snowy week. Nothing like this holiday picture I took in Rhodes last summer β˜€οΈ

It has been wonderful to welcome all my students back and to meet two new students this week. The term ahead looks exciting with loads of new repertoire to learn! 🎹

This is so true.

Thing is that Grade 1, done properly, is actually really complex!

During the pandemic, I taught a lot of children online who’d had to temporarily stop lessons with their face to face teachers.

I encountered several cases of young piano students, between Grades 1-4, who had learnt pieces only by being shown how to play them.

It meant that they could play the pieces, but with no reference to the music, and with no independence of being able to play parts separate hands or from a given spot in the music.

Sometimes it meant that they could play the notes, but with little sense of character, beauty or expression, as it had been such a struggle to learn the notes in the first place!

However, bringing a student to the point where they can learn a Grade 1 piece autonomously, understanding the music, the pedalling, the harmony, the articulation, the techniques required…this takes time and experience of a whole lot of repertoire and musical opportunities.

But that’s where the deep learning takes place that is likely to lead to a much more lifelong connection with the piano.

Wishing all my students a very Happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year!

I hope that family and friends are being entertained by Christmas tunes on the piano. 🎹

My piano teaching might be done for 2025, but this week I am busy with lesson planning for next term and getting up to date with my admin. New books for students have arrived today and I can't wait to hear my students learn some new repertoire next year!
