Thank you to all my students and families for another enjoyable and rewarding term. I hope you all have a wonderful summer holiday, enjoy plenty of piano practice (even just a little each week!), and most importantly, have lots of fun.
I look forward to seeing you all again in September for another exciting year of music-making! β˜€οΈπŸŽ΅πŸŽΉ

The holidays are almost upon us and I have several year 6 students in school who are leaving this term and heading off to senior school. One of my year 6 students played at the school concert on Friday evening and her dad sent me this the day after the concert. 🎹

"I just wanted to say a heartfelt thank you.

Although she was a little nervous beforehand, she played beautifully. The audience gave her a huge round of applause, and afterwards several parents came over to tell me what a stunning and talented performance it was. I could tell they genuinely meant it.

She was incredibly proud of herself afterwards, and it was such a wonderful moment for her.

I really wanted to thank you for all your guidance, encouragement and patience. You have nurtured her confidence and prepared her so well for such a special opportunity. It is an experience she will always remember.

We truly appreciate everything you have done for both girls over the years. Thank you again for your dedication and kindness."

Messages like this are a reminder of why I love my job.⭐️

There’s always a sense of excitement when the new ABRSM syllabus books arrive, and today was no exception!

As a teacher, it’s incredibly refreshing to have a whole new selection of repertoire to explore. New syllabus books bring fresh musical ideas, different styles, and exciting opportunities for students to discover pieces they might never have encountered otherwise. It’s one of the things I enjoy most about the start of a new syllabus cycle.

Of course, the arrival of the books also marks the beginning of some important preparation. Over the summer I will take a look at the repertoire for each grade and consider the best ways to teach each piece. Every student is different, so it’s always interesting to think about which pieces will suit particular personalities, learning styles, strengths, and musical interests. Some students thrive on lyrical and expressive music, while others are drawn to technical challenges or lively character pieces.

Taking the time to carefully assess the new repertoire helps ensure that each student is matched with music that will both challenge and inspire them, making the learning process as rewarding as possible.

The new syllabus can be used for exams from 2027, however the current syllabus remains valid and can be used for exams until the end of 2027 during the overlap period. πŸŽ΅πŸ“šβœ¨

One of the most important parts of a child’s musical progress happens at home. Regular piano practice helps build confidence, discipline, and a love of music, but students need encouragement and support to stay motivated.

Supportive parents make such a difference β€” whether it’s helping create a practice routine, celebrating small achievements, or simply encouraging their child on difficult days. When parents are involved, students grow in confidence and enjoy their musical journey so much more.

As a piano teacher, I feel incredibly lucky to work with so many supportive parents who encourage piano practice at home and help their children thrive musically.

Huge congratulations to my incredible Year 9 student, Oscar who has just won the Intermediate Piano Competition at The Ipswich School for the second year in a row! πŸŽΉπŸ†

To win this competition once is an achievement, but to come back and win it again demonstrates remarkable commitment and maturity as a young musician.

I’m so proud of everything he’s accomplished and excited to see where his musical journey takes him next. Keep up the fantastic work Oscar! πŸ‘πŸŽΆ

Teaching piano is one of the greatest joys of my life β€” not because I teach scales, arpeggios, or exam pieces, but because I teach people.πŸ§β€β™‚οΈπŸ§πŸ§β€β™€οΈπŸ§β€β™‚οΈπŸ§πŸ§β€β™€οΈ

No two students that I teach are are the same. And that’s exactly how it should be.πŸ‘

My students range from 6 years old to 81 years young. Some arrive bursting with energy, barely able to reach the pedals. Others arrive with decades of life experience, finally giving themselves permission to learn something they’ve always dreamed of. Some want to work towards grades. Others simply want to play the music they love. 🎹

Every student is different.

Every lesson is different.

Every journey is different.

This half term seems to be flying by. These are a few highlights of my half term.

🎹 A young pianist learning "Hes A Pirate" even with a broken finger! We have had to change the fi*****ng!

🎹 A year 7 pianist learning the intro to Elton Johns' "Im still standing"

🎹 A year 6 pianist coming to her lessons every week making the most amazing progress between her lessons.

🎹 An adult pianist performing with musicality and colour.
