It's Little Steps this week! Come along on Friday 2nd October at 10:30am for a Super Sports session. If you are looking for something fun, engaging and educational to enjoy with your little one, then join us at Little Steps, our playgroup for children aged 2–4 years.

Little Steps is open to all children aged 2-4 and is held on the first Friday of each month (during term time), from 10:30am. Each themed session offers a different engaging activity such as Fun French, Outdoor Adventures, Music and Movement, along with sensor play, stories and crafts, to encourage creativity and curiosity.

The first Buddy Meeting of the year! One of the special features of Holmwood Life is our Buddy System, which pairs pupils from different year groups. It is an important part of our pastoral care, helping younger pupils feel supported while giving older pupils opportunities to develop responsibility, empathy and leadership.

Pupils keep the same Buddy throughout their time at Holmwood, building a special relationship that grows with them through the school. Today at break, our Buddies came together for the first time this academic year. New Buddies met for the first time, beginning what we hope will be a very special relationship, while existing Buddies were excited to see each other again after the summer holidays.

They spent time reading and playing together, building friendships and a sense of belonging that make the Buddy System such a valued part of Holmwood Life.

The Oakes Room at our Colchester Nursery have been busy in the kitchen! They made their own delicious vegetable soup for snack time, learning about healthy eating while developing some important physical skills along the way.

Peeling vegetables helps to strengthen their hands and fingers, developing fine motor control, hand-eye coordination and independence. Stirring the soup builds wrist and arm strength, coordination and control. All valuable skills for young children as they learn through practical, hands-on experiences, whilst having lots of fun along the way. And finally, of course, there was the very important job of tasting their creation!

Year 7 completed their SPARK Welcome Expedition with great success last week, triumphantly making it through their adventure!

Over the two days, they learnt a whole range of new skills, including how to read a map, pitch a tent, build and cook on a fire, manage a budget and shop for their supplies. Then armed with a map and a set of coordinates, they put their skills to the test as they navigated their way through the hike.

The expedition gave them the opportunity to develop independence, teamwork, problem-solving and resilience, while having plenty of fun and building strong bonds as a year group. A fantastic achievement for Year 7 and a brilliant way to begin their Senior School journey!

What a fantastic Produce Show! A huge congratulations to everyone who entered this year. We were delighted to see such a fantastic number of entries across a huge range of categories, with something for everyone to get involved in, from the heaviest marrow and tallest sunflower, to flower arrangements in unusual containers, fruit and vegetable creatures, jars of homemade fruit jam and freshly baked bread, to name just a few!

This year also saw some exciting new categories for the Senior School, including The Hot Ones Challenge, a homemade bottle of chilli sauce, gourmet desserts and a nature photography category.

It was brilliant to see so many pupils getting creative, growing, baking, making and entering. A huge thank you to Wilkin & Sons Ltd., Tiptree for taking on the very difficult job of judging it all for us!

There’s been plenty happening on the sports front today! The first football and hockey matches of the term are taking place this afternoon, alongside hockey, netball, Strength & Conditioning and football training.

This morning, Year 3 took to the squash courts at for some squash coaching. This half term all pupils from Year 1 to Year 11 will experience squash and tennis coaching as part of their PE lessons.

Plenty of opportunities to get active, learn new skills and enjoy being part of a team!

Our Year 4 pupils are loving all the responsibility, independence and new challenges that come with moving up into the Prep School...and, of course, their brand-new blazers! A new chapter, a new level of independence and plenty of adventures ahead.
