Story books are always such fun and a brilliant way to extend children’s learning. Here are the Penguins enjoying the 3 Little Pigs story. Exploring the properties of straw, sticks and bricks. Experimenting to see if they could blow their own made houses out. Well done Penguins.

Exciting news. Last week our caterpillar’s reached the last stage of their life cycle and turned into beautiful butterflies. The children were able to get so close to them and after the children remained very still the butterflies chose to settle on some of them. Such an amazing experience for the Puffin’s to be involved in.

Ducklings, Cygnets and Swans have been exploring how they can make and change sounds. By exploring a variety of musical instruments they have all thoroughly enjoyed listening to the sounds they have created. Of course all the children also were keen to join in with a little movement using their hands to clap or other resources to express themselves through music. Such fun.

Recently Penguins have been focusing on insects and animals. They have discussed where the animals and bugs may be found, where they live and what they like to eat. Children have visited our bug hotel and designed their own farms and zoos. As well as trying to find and name animals hidden in our very own habitat. What fun!

Recently we had a butterfly farm very kindly gifted to us from a Puffin parent. The children were able to see the caterpillars being placed in their new home. Lots of discussion about the life cycle of a butterfly took place. Afterwards pictures reflecting the stages of the life cycle and butterfly pictures were created. The children are excitedly awaiting for the next stage to develop.

Here at Lexden Lodge we are all about learning through play. Here is a clip of our amazing under two’s reflecting this learning. Opportunities to investigate, explore and create are so important in the Early Years.

Over Christmas, through parties and raffles all our wonderful parents helped to raise £840.00 for two local charities. It has taken us a while to organise the relevant people to come and meet us so we could pass over your kind donations. However last week we invited staff from the Colchester Children's Charity and Emmaus in Colchester to collect their cheques. They were all so pleased to receive such a huge amount and have plans already for how this money will be spent. Many thanks to you all.

Penguins and a few Puffins have been helping to renew our hanging baskets. The children were encouraged to plant the flowers, add compost where necessary and of course water them all. Also seeds were planted for many vegetables to be grown in our new greenhouse. This is currently situated in the garden by the mud kitchen. Of course lots of conversations took place as to what these plants need to help them to grow. Keep watching
this space to see how they grow.
