🌍 Recently at the 11th International Digital Public Health Conference (DPH 2026) in Barcelona, Spain 🇪🇸 (24–26 June), CSEE’s Dr Sefki Kolozali delivered a keynote on Internet of Things for Healthcare and Accessibility at the 2nd International Workshop on Architecture-Based IoT and Artificial Intelligence to Support Public Health.
Sefki also took part in an expert panel on digital health technologies and presented the paper, 'Safety-Prioritised Multimodal Navigation for Edge Smart Glasses with Constrained On-Device Language Models'
The paper was co-authored with CSEE's Professor Klaus McDonald-Maier, Dr Vishwanathan Mohan, and former MSc students Alireza Kalantarhormozi, Abdullah Ahmad, Ali Radwan, Ahmed Jafer, Soran Ghaderi, and Mustafa Mustafa. This research began as part of the students’ CE903 MSc project under Sefki’s supervision and was subsequently developed into a peer-reviewed conference publication!
Congratulations to everyone involved on this fantastic achievement! 🎉

Congratulations to Devon Fry who was awarded The Barrie Chaplain Innovation Award for achieving the highest overall CE301 mark!
Devon’s award-winning project was an intelligent IoT-based vibration monitoring system that uses affordable computing and machine learning to detect potential machinery faults in real time. Built using a Raspberry Pi and vibration sensors, the system continuously monitors equipment health, identifies abnormal behaviour, and can even diagnose likely fault types through a live dashboard. By combining advanced AI techniques with low-cost hardware, the project demonstrates a practical and scalable approach to condition monitoring that could help industries reduce maintenance costs and prevent equipment failures!
The Barrie Chaplin Innovation Award is named in honour of Emeritus Professor Barrie Chaplin, founder of the University of Essex’s Department of Electrical Engineering Science and a pioneer behind several world-first technological innovations. The award celebrates students who demonstrate innovation that benefits society while inspiring others to achieve excellence in their own lives and careers!
We’d also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Andrew Chaplin, Barrie’s son, and Sarah Blake for joining us to present this fantastic award💙
