📌 Establishing ESCALA: A Talk With Founding Professors Dawn Ades and Valerie Fraser
Tuesday 23.01.2024, 6.00 - 8.00 pm
Lakeside Theatre, admission free (booking needed, link in bio)
Join Professor Dawn Ades CBE and Professor Valerie Fraser for an evening of conversation about the establishment of ESCALA and the study of Latin American Art as a subject in the UK.
In 1968, Professor Dawn Ades and Professor Valerie Fraser joined Essex, one as a member of staff and the other as a student. Their shared interest in art from Latin American would lead them to develop pioneering research on the art from the region. In 1993, following a generous donation by MA Art History student Charles Cosac of Memória, a painting by Brazilian artist Siron Franco, both professors took that opportunity to develop ESCALA.
This is a unique opportunity to hear from two pioneering voices about the role of the University of Essex played in the study and research of Latin American Art in the UK and the synergy between students and staff resulting in the creation of ESCALA.
Moderated by Dr Sarah Demelo, Curator (ESCALA, Art, and Special Collections)
The talk will be followed by Q&A.
Admission Free – all welcome. Booking is required.
