Qualified (QTS) Teacher 20+ Years' Experience with full DBS providing personalised, specialist tuition using innovative visual methods to boost attainment and self-esteem across the UK. Much of the thinking behind Visual Tutoring comes from my own experiences as a child (and an adult). Of endless hours spent attempting to learn words from a page, or cast my mind back over words spoken within the f

our walls of a classroom. It was very late on in my own schooling when I realised that the key to my understanding was through drawing, essentially visualising a whole range of subjects through using a pencil, paper and some colouring pencils! I went from being a under-achiever to an A grade student and was able to apply this at University too, where visualisation allowed me to succeed in a whole range of subjects taken as part of my modular degree. In my teaching career, I have used visualisation time and again to unlock children's potential and raise their self-belief - sometimes completely changing their own self-image as a learner. There has been some lovely feedback for my work over the years and I am proud of the comments that many parents have given me regarding the years spent with 'Mr Smith'. I believe that Visual Tuition offers a chance for a huge range of children to enjoy learning, to fully engage in it and to get the results they deserve without feeling that they are simply cogs in a system. It offers them the opportunity for them to take back control, and make education work for them.

☀️ What a lovely first day back ☀️

And I felt so proud to create a page for the first time with one of my pupils - it was a major breakthrough for them on their journey back from school-based trauma. A huge step and the beginning of a very different but hopefully happier kind of learning for them ☺️

*Limited Daytime Tuition Sessions for September*

I have a couple of daytime tuition sessions available, starting in September. These can be used for pupils in a wide variety of circumstances, situations and with a diversity of needs.

I currently work with pupils from Key Stage One up to A Level using a flexible approach to provide what your child needs best to help them, be that simply engaging with learning again or developing skills towards more formal learning.

The daytime sessions are particularly rooted in my work in supporting children’s mental health and special educational needs but often travel into areas which are at the growing tip of new research into neurodivergence.

If you are interested then just pop me a message. It’s lovely to chat too so I’m happy to arrange a Zoom meeting with you to work out how to approach things from the start 🙂

Mr Smith

P.S. One of my talented artistic pupils challenged me to create something on holiday so the photo is for them 😉

I took these photos yesterday as I watched the waves rolling onto the beach. At first, I was really struck by how powerful they were - by the sheer force of all that water as it smashed stone on stone.

But after a while - and I was watching those waves for a LONG time - something else occurred to me.

When the larger waves broke, you could see right through them, as if the foam were floating above a wall of glass.

Every rock and pebble was laid clear in that quick moment, like fish in a tank, before the curl of water broke in front, hiding that clear blue world once again.

How like the pupils I work with this sounds. So often, especially when they were in school, people only really saw the surface and believed that they knew them, just as we look at those waves rippling in the distance and believe we know the sea. Sometimes that surface may seem angry, turbulent, unpredictable.

And I wonder if, the more you are told that this is who and what you are, the more you yourself believe it.

When I’m working with children there is a moment where I finally glimpse the glassy world beneath those waves. It’s one of my favourite parts of what I do. The hidden becomes seen.

Visual Tuition began as a way of visualising concepts with pupils - explaining through visual methods. What I hadn’t expected is that it would take on another meaning - and that meaning is really the heart of what I think the process means to me now.

By finding a way to really see a pupil, I help them see themselves. Often, I help them remove all of those negative ways of seeing themselves that have been layered over the years and rebuild them from the sand upwards.

‘Visual Tuition’ seems to be as much as visualising yourself, visualising who you can be and visualising your future in a way that feels positive, hopeful and honest as it is about concepts.

And I love that.

This post speaks my mind exactly - the ludicrously restricted English curriculum that children face is a huge source of frustration to me. It’s dark, depressing and limits the horizons of experience.

I’d almost forgotten about this one! 🦇 🖤Poetry and bats - two of my favourite things ☺️

☀️ Visual Tuition will be back in September ☀️

What are you going to do in your holidays? I think I’m going to try and get better at my guitar and spend some time with the fish 🐟 🐠 🐟

Have a lovely summer everyone, thank you for a fantastic 2025/2026. You have all been amazing and I feel so privileged to have helped you on your path, wherever it has led us,
