Craftsmanship Worth a Closer Look 🪑

We've got some beautiful Casa dining chairs from Oxleys () in on loan at the moment, here so a client's designer can get hands-on and choose exactly the right weight of chair for their project.

It's a good excuse to really appreciate the detail up close. Every joint, every finish, every proportion considered, this is what proper craftsmanship looks like when you take the time to look for it.

Working with a designer on a project? We're always happy to bring pieces in so you can see and feel them for yourself before committing.

Something Rare Happens Tonight 🌘

This evening, from around 6pm, up to 91% of the Sun will be covered by the Moon here in the South East, the closest we've come to a total eclipse since 1999. The next one this dramatic isn't due again for decades.

You don't need to fight for space in a car park or a public viewpoint. Your own garden works just fine, glass of something cold in hand, comfortable seat, and a clear view west.

One important thing: never look directly at the sun without proper eclipse glasses or filters, even during an eclipse. If you don't have a pair, indirect viewing methods (like a pinhole projector) work just as well.

See you out there this evening.

🌳 Tree of the Week: Morus nigra - the Black Mulberry

"You'll know it's mulberry season before you see the tree," says Don. "You'll see the stains on the patio first." Right now, a mature black mulberry is ripening and dropping fruit all at once, dark red going near-black, closer to a giant blackberry than anything else you'll grow in a Surrey garden.
"There's no holding it back and no tidying it up. It fruits on its own terms, and that's most of what there is to say about it."
Here's the bit most people don't know: "The tree you buy may genuinely be two species working as one. Black mulberry is notoriously reluctant to root from cuttings, so nurseries often graft black mulberry wood onto white mulberry roots, a different species entirely, chosen simply because it grows more willingly. Black fruit above, white mulberry roots below."

Old specimens have another trick up their sleeve, Don explains. "The lower branches lean, sag, and eventually touch the ground, and where they do, they take root themselves. It's effectively cloning itself at its own feet, which is part of why old mulberries look sprawling and improvised rather than neatly shaped."
His advice for anyone tempted: "Choose your planting position very carefully before it goes in. Dropped fruit stains everything it touches, so keep it well away from patios and paths. And if space is tight, look at a compact variety or train it as an espalier against a warm wall, rather than trying to squeeze in a full-size seedling."

One more thing worth knowing: "A seedling tree can take eight years to fruit. A named, grafted variety gets you there much faster, so it's usually the better choice if you don't want to wait."

Come and see one for yourself.

Spotted in the Wild

Again we love to see our products in their final destination.

Yes, those really are our faux boulders, not the real thing.

Fibreglass replica boulders, light as a feather to move and position (try that with actual rock), but with all the realistic texture and colour to fool anyone walking past. Perfect for adding structure and a natural feel to a bed without needing a digger or a bad back to get them in place.

Here they are looking completely at home in a gravel garden. Proof that "faux" doesn't have to mean "obviously fake."

Fancy adding some structure to your own garden? Come and see them for yourself.

Spotted in the Wild 🌿

We love seeing our pieces out living their best life in an actual garden, not just looking good in the showroom.

This is The Florence, one of our own fibreglass pots, made to measure and finished to give that warm, weathered terracotta look, without the cracking or crumbling that real terracotta suffers over a British winter. Paired here with a striking palm, it's doing exactly what a good pot should do: anchoring the planting around it without stealing the whole show.

Fancy something made just for your garden? Come and talk to us about The Florence.

What Lies Beneath 👀

Beautiful, isn't it? A crisp gravel drive that stays crisp, no ruts, no rutting, no gravel migrating across the lawn every time someone parks.

Here's the bit most people never see: StablePave stabilisation panels, working hard underneath, holding every stone exactly where it should be, distributing load evenly, and keeping the whole surface performing properly for years, not just months.

If you're a contractor speccing driveways, this is the difference between a job that looks good on install day and one that still looks good five years later.

Want to know more about specifying StablePave for your next project? Get in touch.

Something worth knowing if you're gardening in a drought. 🌿

With the UK currently experiencing a hosepipe ban in many areas, we wanted to share something that flagged to us recently - and it's genuinely useful.

It appears that in some areas, newly purchased plants and turf may qualify for a 4 week exemption from hosepipe ban restrictions - allowing you to water them in properly during that critical establishment period.

However - and this is important - exemptions can vary depending on your local water supplier and region. So before you reach for the hosepipe, it's absolutely worth checking directly with your water company to confirm what applies in your area.

New plants need water to survive. New turf needs water to establish. Don't lose your investment to a drought without checking whether you're actually exempt first. 💚

We'll always try to share useful information like this when we hear it - and thanks to for the heads up! 🌿

🌳 Tree of the Week: Salix integra 'Hakuro-nishiki' - the Flamingo Willow

"Gone all green on you? Don't panic, that's not a failure, that's just July," says Don. The famous candy-pink and cream flush is a spring performance, and by now it's had its moment. But Don reckons this is actually the better time to really look at it.

"Crouch down and check how the leaves sit on the stem," he says. "Willows normally carry their leaves alternately, one side then the other. This one doesn't. You'll often find them in opposite pairs or whorls of three, which is unusual for a willow. It's a small detail, but it's the kind that tells you someone's actually looked at the plant, not just admired it from the path."

It's almost always sold as a standard, a straight stem topped with a lollipop head, grafted onto ordinary willow rootstock for strength. "Keep an eye on that graft union near the top of the stem," Don warns. "Anything sprouting below it is the plain green rootstock trying to take over, and it needs to go, every time you see it."

For a Surrey garden, Don's advice is simple: "Full sun or light dappled shade, soil that stays reliably moist, it'll even take clay. But if it's in a container, don't let it dry out through summer. This one won't forgive being forgotten in a hot corner."

His top tip for right now: "Give it a light prune in mid to late summer and you'll get a second flush of that pink new growth before autumn. If yours is looking tired and entirely green, this is the week to do it."

Come and see it for yourself.

We love a special visitor. 👀🌿

On Saturday we were delighted to welcome Zoe Franklin MP (Zöe Franklin MP) to Cedar Nursery - here to hear about our story, our team, and what it means to have been looking after the outdoor living needs of the local community for 40 years.

Tim gave her the full tour and told her exactly why we love what we do. She also met Kenny from Thermalux (Saunas & Ice), and popped by our Saturday cooking class to meet Hector, cooking up a storm with the BBQ Company (The BBQ Company).

Four decades of plants, projects, gardens and outdoor spaces. Four decades of local people, local knowledge and local expertise. And still going strong. 🌿

You never quite know who might wander through our gates - and that's one of the things we love most about what we do.

Here's to the next 40 years. 🥂
