Every Tuesday, our resident tree expert Don picks out one tree he thinks deserves your attention โ and this week he's gone somewhere truly extraordinary.
This week's pick: Ginkgo biloba โ the Maidenhair Tree.
"I've been waiting to talk about this one," says Don. "Because this isn't just a tree. This is a living fossil. It was growing on this planet before the dinosaurs walked it. When you plant one, you are placing something that watched the continents shift."
We did say Don could talk about trees all day. ๐
And on this one, you can see why. Those extraordinary fan-shaped leaves โ unlike anything else you'll find in a British garden โ turn a clear, luminous, almost incandescent golden yellow in autumn. And then, often within days, they drop. All at once. Creating a golden carpet beneath the tree that is, quite frankly, breathtaking.
Fully hardy across the UK. Tolerant of pollution, urban conditions and drought once established. Virtually pest and disease free. And the specimens at Kew Gardens, planted in 1762, are still magnificent today.
"This is a legacy tree," says Don. "Plant one for your grandchildren. They'll still be admiring it long after we're gone."
