Seachdain na Gàidhlig North Lanarkshire Gaelic Katie Macfarlane

20/02/2024

This week is Seachdain na Gàidhlig (World Gaelic Week)!

Only the footings of Deer Abbey remain today. Did you have any i-deer that its name is linked to legend and the Gaelic for ‘tear’?

‘Deer’ derives from the old Gaelic word ‘dair’ meaning oak grove. In Gaelic Deer Abbey is known as Abaid Dhèir. According to origin legend, Drostan’s tears (déara) fell on parting from his companion St Columba or Calum Cille here. To which St Columba said, “Let déar (Gaelic for ‘tear’) be its name from now on”.

This isn’t the only connection the site has with Scottish Gaelic. Deer Abbey is associated with the Book of Deer, a manuscript thought to have been made in the AD 900s. The book wasn’t written at the abbey, but the abbey’s predecessor community did have it in its possession from at least the 1100s. Gaelic entries in the Book of Deer, or Leabhar Dhèir, are the earliest known examples of written Scottish Gaelic in existence. Gaelic notes written in the book describe the founding of the early monastery by St Columba.

Tha sinne a’ gabhail pàirt ann an Seachdain na Gàidhlig!

Chan eil ach tobhtaichean Abaid Dhèir air fhàgail an-diugh. An robh fhios agad gu bheil an ainm ceangailte ri faoinsgeul agus a Ghàidhlig airson ‘deur’?

Tha ‘Dèir’ a’ tighinn bhon t-seann fhacal Gàidhlig ‘dair’ a’ ciallachadh doire de dharach. A rèir beul-aithris, thuit deòir (déara) Dhrostain nuair a dhealaich e ri chompanach, Calum Cille, an seo. Thuirt Calum Cille, “Biodh Dèir mar ainm bho seo a-mach”.

Chan e seo an aon cheangal a th’ aig an làrach seo ri Gàidhlig. Tha Abaid Dhèir co-cheangailte ri Leabhar Dhèir, làmh-sgrìobhainn a thathas a' smaoineachadh a chaidh a dhèanamh anns an 10mh linn. Cha deach an leabhar a sgrìobhadh aig an abaid, fo sheilbh a’ choimhearsnachd a bha ann ron an abaid bho an 12mh linn. 'S e na cunntasan Gàidhlig a th’ ann an Leabhar Dhèir, na h-eisimpleirean as tràithe a tha aithnichte de Ghàidhlig sgrìobhte. Tha notaichean Gàidhlig a tha sgrìobhte san leabhar ag innse mar a stèidhich Calum Cille a’ mhanachainn.
