Tale of Two Championships
As you may of heard me speak about my star coached rider Jen Clegg, who is in her 70s and smashing it! When people come in for bike fits I have picture of Jen in the office on her bike in full aero position from a race and I refer to it on a daily basis, so when people say “I can’t train aero” I say look at Jen and it often blows their mind. She’s awesome! I wanted Jen to do a write up about 2 of her most recent victory rides. This lady is truly inspirational!!
………………
The VTTA 10 mile Championship in May was on F11/10.This course has a ‘gift’ hill – one you don’t have to reclimb. It is a safe 6%, well protected from wind by a cutting & trees. Most of 2025’s potholes had been filled in. The day brought dry roads, a perfect temperature, & still air. New neuromuscular pathways created by PT Charlotte Wheatley connected my brain to more of my body paid off. On actual 23.40, Age Adjusted Time 16.41) I won both the overall win & the F championship. I also was part of the East Midlands the group award (me, Richard Oakes & Mike Twelves), and got a new national age record.
The VTTA 25 mile Championship in June on F2/25D has11 roundabouts! I was lucky to meet only one oncoming car. The race almost ended disastrously. Riding around Madingly RAB for the last time a previous route popped into my melting brain, & I headed towards the 3rd exit where an old course finished. I owe my win to the alert marshal who frantically waved me to the 4th exit, ensuring that I ended in the right place.
My time (Actual 1.01.43, AAT 43.41) got me the win, tied with Masters legend Linda Dewhurst. Team Bottrill Nopinz also won the team prize (me, Matt Uttley & Keith Dorling. Also an East Midlands win on the group prize (me, Richard Oakes & Mike Twelves). Pending ratification, that is also a new VTTA National Age Record. Those new brain-body connections counter age-related declines in HR & power, & helping me understand how to get the best out of my Liv Avow TT bike. The only problem is it now takes a full 15 minutes for me to come down after a race.
