It’s been a while since I posted on here…
Anyway, I love this graphic from NeuroWild One of the (many) great things about tutoring is that the student can learn in a way that suits them. Some of my students prefer to stand rather than sit, some of them have a favourite fidget toy, some of them need to doodle. My job is work out what their preferred learning style is and use it to support their learning.

Shout out to the teachers who have moved away from neuronormative expectations at school 🙌

Portishead Arts Festival kicks off in just 10 days time. There will two art/craft markets (I’ll be selling my creations at Somerset Hall on the Saturday), live music, talks, walks and all sorts including lots of fab activities for children, some of which are free! It promises to be a fantastic weekend. All the details can be found below. Hopefully I’ll see you there!

Another school year very nearly done. And for me, another year working with some truly fantastic young people. I honestly love my job - it’s a privilege to work with these children every week and to see their confidence grow.

The Y4 multiplication check is currently underway in schools across the country. Whether or not this is a fair or necessary assessment is open for debate but one thing’s for sure - memorising a list of facts and being able to regurgitate them at speed is not the same as understanding those facts.

This is something I frequently see. A child may know that 5x2=10, but when asked to show it, they will show a 5 and a 2. When asked to explain they then often say that you need to get a 5 and a 2 and it makes 10. Having recall of times table facts is fantastic, but this is generally much more difficult when it's without understanding. Without understanding, such facts can't be applied - when finding other unknown facts, dividing or problem solving for example.

If you want to check whether a child understands what multiplication (or times) means, give them some counters, Numicon, Cuisenaire, coins or other items and ask them to show what a fact they can recall looks like.
