📚 Have you ever heard of an examiner’s report? 📝

They’re freely available on exam board websites, and they can be incredibly useful for students preparing for their GCSE English exams!

But what exactly are they, and why should students use them?

💡 Examiner’s reports explain what examiners noticed when marking real exam responses. They highlight what students did well, common mistakes and where students often lost marks.

For your child, this can be a real eye-opener! 👇

✅ Understand what examiners are looking for – discover what makes an effective response.

✅ Avoid common mistakes – learn which approaches tend to limit marks.

✅ Improve exam technique – understand the difference between a basic response and one that develops ideas effectively.

✅ Learn from other students’ experiences – see the strengths and weaknesses examiners identified in previous exam answers.

🎯 My top tip for parents: Don’t just encourage your child to read the report from beginning to end! Pick one question they find challenging and look at the examiner’s comments for that specific question. Ask them:

“What do you think the examiner wanted students to do here?”

That simple question can lead to some really valuable revision.

Head to your child’s exam board website and search for GCSE English Language examiner reports or GCSE English Literature examiner reports. Make sure you choose the correct specification and paper.

When looking for a tutor, one question parents may have is: “Will my child get the support they need?” 🤔

Having worked with a wide range of students throughout my teaching career, I know that each student learns differently. What helps one student understand something might not be what works for another.

That’s why I adapt and personalise my sessions to suit individual learners, whether that’s breaking tasks down into smaller steps, using visual prompts, or finding different ways to explain a tricky concept.

📚 Here’s an example from a recent session, where I used a visual prompt to help a student picture a soldier’s isolation from society when studying poetry.

It’s a small adaptation, but it can make a real difference to understanding.

Not every student needs this level of visual support, and that’s absolutely fine. The important thing is recognising what works for each individual and being flexible enough to provide it.

Because supporting students isn’t about expecting everyone to learn in the same way; it’s about finding the approach that works for them. ☺️

📚 A reminder of the benefits of my online group sessions!

My group sessions are something I dreamed of running when I left the classroom last summer, and it’s so lovely to see that vision come to life! ☺️

I love the collaboration, the conversations and, most importantly, seeing each student grow in confidence each week.

📚 Tuesday at AP Tuition! 🖊️

It’s been a busy morning with lots of English skills being developed across my IGCSE and GCSE sessions.

Here’s a little look at what we’ve been working on today…

📖 IGCSE English Language - Anthology
We’ve been working through Unit 2 of the anthology, focusing on Disabled by Wilfred Owen. We’ve been annotating the poem, exploring the language and developing a deeper understanding of the writer’s message.

📝 GCSE English Language
With resits coming up next month, we’ve been focusing on those tricky ‘How’ questions. We’re practising how to select relevant textual evidence and develop thoughtful comments that explore the writer’s methods and analyse their effects. It’s all about moving beyond spotting techniques and really explaining how they work.

✍️ IGCSE English Language – Non-Fiction Writing
We’ve also been developing non-fiction writing skills, focusing on creating a lively, engaging tone and varying vocabulary choices to keep the reader interested.

✨Coming up this evening…
After the school run, I’ll be back online with my Year 11 Eduqas GCSE English group this evening. We’re moving on to Component 2 writing, with a focus on using a formal tone effectively and adapting our writing for the intended audience and purpose.

Now, time to grab a cuppa before the afternoon school run! ☕😂

📚 GCSE Macbeth: Lady Macbeth in Act 5 📚

Preparing for your mocks? Let’s explore Lady Macbeth’s tragic downfall. 👑

🩸 “Out, damned spot!”

Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth as psychologically destroyed by her guilt.

The imperative “Out” reveals her desperate attempt to regain control, contrasting with her earlier confidence and dominance in Act 1.

The metaphorical “spot” symbolises the blood of Duncan, suggesting that although she once believed that “a little water clears us of this deed”, her guilt has become impossible to remove.

The adjective “damned” also evokes religious condemnation, reflecting Jacobean fears surrounding sin and eternal punishment.

Shakespeare challenges the idea that ambition and power bring fulfilment and he uses Lady Macbeth’s psychological deterioration to demonstrate that regicide has consequences that cannot simply be washed away.

🍂 Happy Monday everyone! 🍂

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend, despite the colder weather starting to creep in!

Monday has got off to a fantastic start, with my Key Stage 3 group beginning their new Gothic Writing topic! 👻

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be exploring:
▪️What makes a text Gothic?
▪️How to use show, not tell to create vivid, atmospheric descriptions.
▪️How to build tension, create suspense and bring our own Gothic writing to life.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the students develop their descriptive writing skills, experiment with language and build their confidence over the coming weeks!

🎭 Bring English Literature to life! 📚

Reading and studying a play is one thing, but seeing it performed on stage can bring a whole new level of understanding.

Here are the upcoming performances for the Shakespeare GCSE plays: Macbeth and Romeo & Juliet.

But why should students consider seeing these texts performed live? 👇

✨ Understand characterisation – See how actors use facial expressions, body language, tone and movement to bring characters to life.

✨ Explore Shakespeare’s intentions – Live performances help students understand how directors and actors interpret key scenes, relationships and themes.

✨ Develop AO2 analysis – Observing staging, lighting, sound and dramatic techniques can help students think more deeply about how meaning is created.

✨ Build confidence with the texts – Watching a play can make characters, key moments and themes more memorable, helping students develop a stronger personal response.

Of course, seeing a production isn’t essential to achieving a high grade, but it can be a fantastic way to deepen your understanding and make your revision more engaging!

📚 English Literature TOP TIP: EMBED YOUR CONTEXT ✍️

One of the biggest mistakes I see in GCSE English Literature answers is bolting context onto the end of a paragraph.

❌ Bolted-on context:

Scrooge is presented as selfish because he refuses to give money to the poor.

Context: Victorian society had a large divide between the rich and poor.

The context is simple but relevant… and it feels like an extra piece of information that has simply been added on.

Instead, try to weave context into your analysis.

✅ Embedded context:

Scrooge’s dismissive attitude towards the poor reflects the harsh attitudes that existed within Victorian society, particularly towards those who were considered part of the “surplus population”. Dickens uses Scrooge to criticise the lack of compassion shown towards the poor and to challenge wealthy Victorian readers to reconsider their attitudes.

✨ The difference?

The context is now helping to explain the character, the writer’s message and the meaning of the quotation — rather than sitting separately at the end.

That small change can make your contextual knowledge feel much more purposeful and much more analytical.
