This last week I was very lucky to lead this group of painters, we made the best of the sunshine and spent quite a lot of time painting outdoors- pure joy! If you’re interested in the art holidays I’m running in 2027 please do let me know 😃🌿

Well here’s a little something coming up in November… I’ll be part of a collective of artists and crafters showing off some new work, I’m hoping to create several new pieces during the event so will be bringing paints and easel - why not come along and see how it’s going?! 🤓🎨

As a Northern lass I struggle to get to London very often, if at all, so was thrilled to see this exhibition travel to Derby… was not disappointed! Really worth going, very inspiring and thoughtfully set out, with a stunning collection of mezzotints too (what folks could buy back in the day before photography was invented, still very expensive so only for the wealthy classes). Wright’s careful and well-studied use of light to highlight each scene is mind blowing and makes me realise how much we rely on photography nowadays, which is rather shameful when you see his work! (I must try harder and sketch from life… always!!) 🌈 the exhibition is on until November so make sure you visit- it’s free but do leave a donation. I had an amazing cheese scone with red onion chutney in their cafe too, surrounded by a fabulous collection of locally made pottery. These pictures are not mine, but copied from Derby Museum’s website as I forgot to take any while I was there, so my apologies for any copyright infringement here- non intended!! Tip - The car park next door is only £2.60 if you bring your ticket to the museum for them to swipe 👍

SOLD!! Now winging its way over to Ireland with the new owner 🇮🇪😀

this panoramic painting of the view from Longshaw estate in Derbyshire is rather too wide to view on instagram’s portrait format, however here are a series of thumbnail sections which highlight separate areas - looking at them this way is making me wonder if I could interrogate this view further, in smaller chunks maybe? 🤔

We scattered my Dad’s ashes up here many years ago and it was a similarly blustery, October day, as depicted in this painting. It always reminds me of that day. A place with special memories.

We have been having such a gorgeous time there hasn’t been a moment spare to post any pictures of our retreat so far… the sun has shone and our intrepid participants have been up hill and rocky crag, through the wooded valley and are now relaxing on the local pub…

Watercolours and sketching techniques have been popular so far with a few forays into acrylic - it’s all been very creative so far! Our thanks go to Claudine and team for looking after us so well - gorgeous meals each day and packed lunches for our sketching travels - what artist could ask for more?! Winston the dog is also helping 😄💥

Gorgeous day painting outdoors as part of Hopton Hall’s “month of art”, lots of other artists dotted about with easels, such fun 🤩 why not pop in this July to see the roses, gardens and Lesley Linley’s super watercolour exhibition - winner of 2025’s award 😎✨ cafe with refreshments too 👍

Don’t think my attempts are good enough to enter the competition - it’s rather sketchy but I much prefer to leave it as a sketch done all on location than spend hours slaving over a photograph back at home at this sunny time of year - there’s far too much to do outdoors!

As a Derbyshire landlubber I’m always excited to be heading to the coast - in preparation for my art retreat in Lynmouth this August I picked up this fantastic collection of vintage postcards 😃 will the way we view the landscape have changed since they were published? How will our lovely participants choose to depict the scenery? And more importantly, will the weather be kind for us?! 😆

Looking forward to guiding the group around the wooded gorges, rivers and cliff to scenery, sketchbook in hand, whatever the weather… I can’t wait!!

Alas! A stinking cold virus has stopped me in my tracks, today I have found the only thing I can manage is sitting still outdoors… somehow watercolours can be used with even the most pickled brain so I gathered some of these enormous peonies from my garden where they sprout so effortlessly each year, sublime. Giant pom-Pom blooms. I used permanent rose and permanent crimson. Never underestimate the power of gazing at flowers to make you feel better 🌺🥰
