We have had an exceptionally busy and very hot end to our Summer Term and the academic year 2026. Staff and children embraced the weather and used it as a meaningful learning opportunity, exploring how to manage and stay safe in hot conditions. Through daily routines, conversations and practical experiences outdoors, children learned about keeping hydrated, seeking shade, recognising when their bodies feel too warm, and understanding why sun hats and sun cream are important. This supported both their self‑care skills and their growing awareness of personal safety.
We have covered (see attached photos) a wide range of themes this term, including sun safety, minibeasts, farms, art and sports, while also supporting children with their upcoming transitions to school or their next year here at Clare Bears. It has been a joy to watch each child grow, learn and flourish, and we consider it a privilege to be part of their learning journeys. We have loved getting to know all our children and their families, and we will miss all our leavers so much in September. We wish every Clare Bear who is moving on to primary school the very best as they begin the next stage of their learning journey.
Thank you to all our families for their continued support — it truly makes our work so worthwhile.

This week is sports week and we have been introducing the children the a range of different sports and talking about the benefits of regular exercise. Physical Development is vital in children, enabling them to pursue happy, healthy, active lives. Sports activities support our children in building core strength, stability, balance, spatial awareness, co-ordination and agility. Children can enjoy being outside, getting active and working together as a team. Playing sports is also a fun and positive way to celebrate children's achievements.

We had many sports available to have a go at today including soft ball tennis, two feet jump, football, basketball, egg and spoon races, running races, target and balancing games.

Children’s Art Week is an annual celebration of creativity for children, organized by Engage, the National Association for Gallery Education in the UK. The event runs across June and July 2026 and aims to inspire young artists, support their artistic development, and highlight the importance of arts education. Schools, galleries, museums, and community centres participate, making art accessible to children nationwide.

The theme for Art Week 2026 is “Curiosity and Kindness.” Art Week is an opportunity for learners to be curious about the world and their own creative discovery. Through looking at and making art, they will explore new materials and ideas in ways that can make the world a better place, by delving into what matters to them, sharing and connecting with others, and developing a sense of belonging. By seeking out hope and joy, they will also learn how art can help spread kindness.

We have designed an art activity using natural wood slices that can be used as coasters and taken home as gifts as an act of kindness. The children were asked to think about what colours they would like to decorate their coaster and we explored some designs together. The children then experimented with the different patterns and ideas before choosing one to create on their own coaster.

TIPS
If you want to join in, Children's Art Week 2026 will run across June and July. Creative activities are taking place across the country both online, at home and in schools. Venues of all kinds, and capacities will play host to this wonderful celebration of the arts. From libraries to heritage venues and even country parks, there will be a range of opportunities for young people to get inspired, engaged and entertained.

This week is farm week. We have been reading stories, singing farm related songs, looking a photographs and non fiction books to explore and learn more about them.
We set up a range of farm activities to help children learn about what animals you can find on a farm and what kind of jobs there are. We aim to build on their knowledge and understanding as they find out more about how life works on a farm. We have highlighted some new vocabulary, for example, naming farm animals and their features including hooves, fur, tails, horns, fleece as well as common crops and machinery.

Later this week we are visiting Boydells Dairy Farm a small local working farm, run by the Threadgold family. The farm is open to the public and specialises in sheep milking. It provides a fun-packed and educational visit for children and adults alike.
Most of the usual farm animals are to be found here, but, unlike other open farms, they give you a guided tour with lots of hands-on stuff, for example you can try milking a cow, feeding hens, or outstaring a llama!

This week is 'Next Steps Week'. Next steps are targets or goals we have set with and for the children with input from their parents as appropriate. We have set up a range of activities and resources for the children to explore, develop and work on their own unique 'next steps'. Bear in mind that children will progress at vastly different rates – for many children, their next step could be a longer-term goal, while others may achieve their next step within a much shorter time-frame. In order for children to make good progress through the EYFS we plan and use their individual next steps to help them meet those goals and achievements.

This week we have been learning about Minibeasts and Life Cycles. We have been discovering the different stages in the life cycles and the process creatures go through between being eggs to becoming adults. Our aim is for our children to gain a greater understanding of the natural world and learn the key vocabulary associated with these animals and cycles.

Using our life cycle models, photographs and reference books we have been finding out and ordering the life cycles of butterflies, frogs, ladybirds and bees. Each child has then chosen their favourite minibeast cycle to make into a headband to take home and share with their families. We have challenged them to tell their families about the process on their chosen headband.

In case your child needs a prompt here is the correct order and key vocabulary we have been learning for each cycle:
Butterfly life cycle = Egg-caterpillar-chrysalis-butterfly
Ladybird life-cycle = Egg-larva-pupa-ladybird
Bee life cycle = Egg-larvae-pupa-bee
Frog life cycle = Frogspawn-tadpole-froglet-adult frog

We are also raising our own ladybirds and butterflies in the setting giving our children a glimpse into the fascinating world of insects whilst providing an opportunity to witness first hand the magic and wonder of insect metamorphosis. We will update you on their progress!

This week we have been learning about sun safety. Sun safety is important all year round but particularly during the summer months. We talked about why is it important to stay safe in the sun. We explained that protecting yourself from harmful UV rays and high temperatures is very crucial. The sun can cause sunburn, dehydration and many more harmful effects.

We explained to the children that there are some simple ways to make sure we are protected:
Putting on sun cream,
Wearing hats and sunglasses,
Drinking plenty of water and
Going into the shade when it gets to hot are very easy methods of avoiding the dangers of being out in the sun and help us to enjoy the warm weather over a longer period.

The children then explored our sun safety tips leaflet and will be bringing a copy home to share with their family. We all had a turn to try on sun hats, sunglasses and I modelled how to put on sun-cream. We then showed the children posters of summer scenes with question cards for them to select to help further their understanding of sun safety. Our aim was to challenge the children to use their observation skills and context clues to solve questions about the summer scenes and share their own experiences.

What a great start we have had to our Summer Term. Here are some photos to show some of the things we have been getting up to. Weekly themes we have covered include: Plants and Growth, International Dance Day, Allergy Awareness, National Numeracy Week and Fire Safety.

National Numeracy Day is on 21st May 2026. It was established as an independent charity in 2012 to help raise levels of numeracy among both adults and children and to promote the importance of everyday maths skills. National Numeracy Day UK tries to highlight how much numbers are used in our lives, every day. This can range from the sports that people watch, the books that people read and in the shops when using money.

This week we set up a number of 'number' based activities for the children to explore and discover for themselves how important numbers are in their lives already! We challenged them to spot the numbers in each activity and suggest why they are there and used.

Each activity highlights how numbers are important and very helpful:

1. Dates- numbers tell us the date and year and our ages
2. House numbers- so postman knows where to post our letter's and friends can find our house
3. Money- numbers tell us how much money/ coins are worth
4. Shopping- numbers help us know how many and types of foods etc we need to buy
5. Clocks- numbers tell us the time
6. Cooking- numbers tell us quantity and weight- measuring ingredients
7. Books- page numbers, information about numbers
8. Phones- numbers help us contact people by each having a unique phone number
9. Television- the channel number or even when you’re changing the volume
10. Scoring- numbers are used in sports or games

There are loads of things you can do with your children both inside and outside the house to improve their numeracy. Here are a few tips: (Please note there are other tips attached as photos in this observation)

Look out for numbers everywhere you go - point them out to your child, see if they can identify them
Ask your child to arrange their toys in order of size when tidying up
Play board games that use dice or other forms of counting
Point out the time on the clock at particular times of day like meal times or bed time

Last week was International Firefighters' Day (May 4) to honour the bravery, service, and unwavering commitment firefighters bring to our communities. This day offers a moment to remember those who have lost their lives in the line of duty and to celebrate the firefighters who continue to protect us. The day is also a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by firefighters and to show our support and appreciation to the firefighters worldwide who continue to protect us so well throughout the year.

This week we have been talking about 'Fire Safety'. We have been sharing experiences of when fire can be useful, for example, lighting candles, fuel for log burners etc, bonfires and barbeques. We explained that although fire can be useful it is also very dangerous and we need to be very careful with it to stay safe.
Later this week we are visiting our local fire station to find out more about keeping safe around fires and learn about the important role of the fire service.

At Clare Bears we practice our fire drill every month (different days of the week) but decided this week to have one each day to give all our children the opportunity to learn and know the procedure and link this experience to our topic.
During our morning registration we showed our fire drill poster and reminded the children of our procedures. The children learnt that we call 999 in an emergency.

Later on at a random time we then rang the bell to begin our fire drill.
