How do sociologists make sense of the world around us?

Our new Year 12 Sociology students explored this question last week with Emily Falconer from the University of Westminster, who delivered an inspiring session on 'Thinking Sociologically.'

The workshop encouraged students to look beyond individual stories and consider the wider social patterns that shape people's lives, identities, beliefs and opportunities. Students also examined how social groups and institutions influence our understanding of what is considered 'normal' in society.

A big thank you to Emily for sharing her expertise and giving our students a fascinating insight into sociological thinking.

🎨 Less than two weeks into the new term, our UAL Level 2 Award in Art and Design students are already getting out of the classroom and into some of the UK’s most inspiring creative spaces.

A recent visit to Britain introduced students to contextual research in art and design, giving them the opportunity to engage directly with significant works of art and develop their drawing, observation and recording skills through a series of set tasks across the first-floor galleries.

These early opportunities are designed to broaden horizons, spark curiosity and help students see how artists and designers gather inspiration from the world around them. Experiencing artworks first hand encourages deeper thinking, creative confidence and a greater understanding of the contexts that shape art and design.

A fantastic start to the year, with students already expanding their knowledge, experiences and creative perspectives beyond the classroom walls. ✏️

At SFX, we pride ourselves on the enrichment opportunities we provide for our students and, on Friday, the Quad was filled with our wonderful new students as they spent lunchtime exploring the huge selection of clubs and societies on offer.

Like sport? We’ve got football, netball, badminton, table tennis, Muay Thai and fitness training, just to name a few.

Interested in something more creative? How about Dungeons & Dragons, Film Club, Book Club, Chess Club, Knitting Club or Creative Writing Club?

We’ve also got Chaplaincy, Culture Café, Hidden History, Young Enterprise and so much more.

And that’s only a small snapshot of what’s on offer. Enrichment is a fantastic way to try something new, develop new skills, pursue your interests and, most importantly, make new friends outside the classroom.

And you won’t believe how many students signed up to be Student Ambassadors! Let’s just say there’ll be lots of them around to help at our Open Day on 17 October. Welcome aboard everyone!

🎉 What an Induction Day! 🎉

Today, we were delighted to welcome hundreds of new students through our doors as they officially began their journey at St Francis Xavier Sixth Form College.

Students queued along the block to register and once signed in, they got to meet the Principal, then enjoyed a day packed with activities and icebreakers, giving them the chance to meet their new classmates, collect their timetables and settle into life at SFX. And, of course, there were doughnuts for everyone! 🍩

We hope you all had a fantastic first day and felt right at home. We can’t wait to see you again tomorrow for your first lessons. Welcome to the SFX community! 💙

And that's a wrap! This year's enrolment is officially full!

It's been a record year for applications, and we'd like to congratulate everyone who managed to secure a place. We're delighted to welcome you as new students and can't wait to meet you at your induction day next Wednesday.

A huge thanks to all the staff and helpers who have kept the enrolment wheels turning over the last week. From answering questions and solving last-minute problems to making sure every student felt welcome, they were absolutely brilliant.

And a very special mention to our amazing Student Ambassadors, who gave up part of their summer holidays to help welcome our newest students. Whether it was were giving directions, reassurance, or just a few words of encouragement, they helped make enrolment a little less daunting.

Now it's time to catch our breath over the bank holiday, celebrate a fantastic team effort, and get ready to welcome our new students next week. 🎉👏
