Thorpe Dyslexia Centre

A place where dyslexia is understood and supported Hi, I am Helen.

I work in a friendly atmosphere, and as I am dyslexic myself I understand the struggles and frustrations relating to dyslexia experienced by adults and children.

Operating as usual

Sometimes it is easy to use phrases that come naturally but here are some other options that promote awareness and problem solving rather than fear and worry

Two more weeks until the summer holidays. I do have sessions during the holiday.

Just saw this post on fb. If it saves just one life this summer it’s worth sharing

I'm always complaining that this isn't made more visible to people visiting our beaches. It's boggling to know that even some 'coasties' don't know this so I'm sharing it to hopefully help spread the word. This is really simple. You can spot a rip current. Unfortunately, it's where it looks easiest and safest to enter the sea. This is because the rip current is looping around and pulling back OUT. Hence no waves rolling IN. NEVER ENTER THE SEA HERE. If you are already in the sea and get caught in a rip current (you'll know because you will suddenly be moved from your location and it will be impossible to swim against it) don't panic. Swim ACROSS, not against the rip current. For example, rather than trying to swim to shore while being pushed out, swim parallel to the beach and you will be able to get out. Then you can swim ashore. Please educate friends or family visiting the beaches this summer. Stay safe 🙏
EDIT: This post is about rip currents, NOT rip tides which are a different ocean phenomenon. These come about from the waves interacting with the sea bed and are very unpredictable. Due to some insensitive comments with regards to a recent tragic event, I have been asked to clarify this.

I went to the Dyslexia Shop at the N.E.C It was worth the trip, learnt about the pros and cons of teaching joined up writing too early and why some children cannot and should not be made to do this.

It's worth listening to the Keith Brymer Jones interview on Radio 2's Good Morning Sunday.

Luxe scent studio will be at this event for both days 🌲🎅🎄

Don’t forget tomorrow starts the new Facebook ( name, META) rule where they can use your photos. Don't forget the Deadline is today!!! Looking forward to seeing all my students again starting today. 😀

What support does your child need with their reading, spelling and writing?

While walking I met a fellow dyslexic, it was so good to talk.

I'm interested in your child's experiences and to offer help

Happy New Year.

Merry Christmas
Happy Winter Solstice

The treasure hunts went well, lots of reading comprehension and treats were all part of the fun.

Christmas is coming and it's time to plan another treasure hunt.

He makes sense to me. Listening works.

Why are some teachers still expecting dyslexic children to read and write unaided?

Let's get back to printing letters when starting to teach a child to write. I have noticed an increase in the number of children being unable and confused as to how to form letters; because they are being taught cursive writing before they know each letter's initial movements and shape.
