Had a great time with the students learning about some local history, making aircraft, visiting the memorial to the first mainland civilian casualties of the second world war, then on to The East Essex Aviation Museum and flying aircraft near the sea...too close as it happens and we lost an aircraft when the wind took it into the estuary.
I love how children just have a go. Some of these robots don't look like they can function due to their weight or dragging things but off they go. The drill is spectacular!
Exploring mechanical movment
Thank you to all the pupils at who took part in the LEGO robotics after school club this term. As I promised post some of their finall inventions, here are a few videos.
Some more Lego WeDo inventions
It's such a great moment when you have been striving to code multifunctioning robots, and it finally happens. At last we have our first Cutebot with servo arms. This requires a lithium battery kit and a special Lego compatible servo motor.
Additionally, an elecfreaks joystick compatible with a Microbit. Both joystick Microbit and Cutebot Microbit require quite detailed block coding using the Elecfreaks wiki to help as a coding guide.
So our exploration of Microbits and cutebots is progressing very well. This video demostrates obstacle avoidance using the ultrasound 'eyes' on the cutebot. Students had a lot of fun combining the new coding with previously learned coding so tgat it not only avoided obstacles but had colourful lights. Some added music and changed the distances with which the Cutebot avoided things. All good coding learning!
On Tuesday 28th May we had our 19th Holiday workshop. The theme this time was Napoleonic Fortifications'. The students learned about Napoleon and why he was such a threat to Britain and why we built so many forts up and down the country. We built our own sections of a fort called 'The Redoubt' at Harwich. We also painted Artillerymen and cannons. Lastly, we went to visit the fort and received a guided tour from the very knowledgeable staff.
With Châu Dân – I just got recognised as one of their rising fans! 🎉
Check out our latest holiday workshop 'Sailboats' blog
SAILBOATS HOLIDAY WORKSHOP Workshop objectives: • To learn about the sailboat building history of Brightlingsea • To construct a ‘Smack’ sailing boat based on the Brightlingsea Smacks • To visit the Brightlingsea Museum to learn about the history of boat building in and around Brightlingsea • To test our sailboats...
Jack, our guide was a kind and entusiatic guide around the museum
What the accommodation was like for sailors on a fishing boat
HMS Nemo was a Royal Navy shore establishment set up in Brightlingsea during the war. The museum had a section on the station which the children really enjoyed.
Our holiday workshop 'Sailboats' where we built Brightlingsea 'Smacks' traditional fishing boats during the morning, then visited the wonderful Brightlingsea Museum in the afternoon
Some highlights of our after-school club projects: Cranes with working winches and ability to turn, model and scenery building and Robotics and coding.
Ever since learning out about this Santa and Reindeer build with the Lego WeDo sets i've wanted to get the children to have a Grand National style race. A bit out of season but that didn't seem to bother anyone.
Nice to see the children getting creative with our toilet roll droids. They were to introduce a switch for this Electronics activity then get creative with the rest.
Spent a fun day teaching kids at the Creative Tech festival in Basildon. They enjoyed creating electricity with the miniature wind turbine kits. We then wired them up to LED lights, then switches, placing them in the dolls houses to get them to understand the link between wind Turbines and lights in their homes. Some even went a little further changing the turbine blades and seeing if they can create more electricity. They used a multimeter to check the voltage.
Just been working with Creative Tech at their festival in Basildon. Here, the children were learning about Wind Turbines. After a short presentation about wind Turbines in Essex, the children and parents made small wind Turbine kits. Using a table fan to make wind, they generated electricity to light LED lights. They added more light, a switch and tested them in a dolls house. As an extension, some tested different types of Turbine blades with a multimeter to see which created the most electricity.
Getting these buggies to move was somewhat taxing!
Sometimes when a monster doesn't do exactly as it's told it's fun anyway. This one just span around making a colourful dance!
Some very creative creatures made with dual shaft geared motors, wheels and battery packs with built in switches. A simple idea but great to inspire children who are starting out in discovering Electronics.
Some final pictures on our Christmas Holiday workshop.
Our little clay figurines. Lots if joy making these.
More photos in order if making.
Just finished our Christmas Holiday workshop. So proud of us three adults for making a huge effort to get these memorable Christmas Sceneries completed and taken home to add some magic.
On Wednesday 22nd November I spent a day at Felixstowe Academy teaching Secondary children about careers in the Wind Farm energy industry. This was followed up by wind turbine kits building where they wired up LED lights into houses and tested different turbine blades to see which made the most electricity.
