Uniformed Protective Services students have welcomed some exciting guest speakers this week!

Louise from the Royal Navy delivered a brilliant session in which she spoke about the purpose of the Royal Navy, as well as the different job roles and opportunities.

They were also visited by Craig from Sopra Steria, who spoke about his policing career which concluded as the Deputy Chief Constable of Wiltshire Police. He shared highlights of his career, thoughts on promotion and leadership, and some examples of work he has done.

Year 1 A-level Politics students recently welcomed Alistair Taylor, Senior Private Secretary to the Leader of the House of Lords, for an engaging and interactive insight into how Parliament scrutinises the Executive.

Students took on the roles of members of key select committees, such as the Treasury and Home Affairs Committees, analysing briefing materials and preparing lines of inquiry. The session culminated in a lively mock Liaison Committee hearing, with their Politics lecturer stepping into the role of Prime Minister and facing rigorous questioning from the student-led committees.

This hands-on experience brought the scrutiny function of Parliament to life, demonstrating how select committees hold government to account and providing students with a valuable practical application of our studies of Parliament.

Alistair also shared his own career journey into public service, offering students an invaluable insight into opportunities within Parliament and government. He emphasised the importance of developing a broad range of experiences beyond the classroom, highlighting how extracurricular involvement can help students build competitive applications and stand out in future careers!

Thank you to Alistair for delivering such a brilliant session.

Recently A-level Politics students had the opportunity to sit down via Teams with Lord Kirkhope of Harrogate as part of the Learn with the Lords initiative.

They discussed a wide range of relevant topics and issues. These included Lord Kirkhope's wider experience and how this offered him a path into the House of Lords, his work on committees, particularly his focus on the growing opportunities and challenges of AI, and a whole host of other topical issues.

A really engaging session that will support the students' topic on Parliament, where they look at the House of Lords and their important role regarding scrutiny.

Towards the end of the last academic year, 14 Cirencester College students undertook an Institute for Research in Schools project, which allowed them to work in groups to conduct real scientific research and produce an academic poster.

In June, they attended the prestigious IRIS conference in Exeter, where they presented their posters, and one group presented their project on "Comparative Analysis of Supersymmetric Detection Methodsโ€ to the whole conference. They spoke incredibly well, and recently found out that they had won won the IRIS Outstanding Project Award for 2026. Selected from 267 research projects nationwide, the work was recognised as an outstanding example of student-led research in action.

This week, all students who completed an IRIS project welcomed their friends and family to college for an awards presentation to celebrate their hard work.

Well done to all involved, you should all be incredibly proud of your efforts.
