Old Manโ€™s Beard (wild clematis) makes a beautiful โ€” and brilliantly sustainable โ€” natural tinder in Forest School. ** Look up close and you can see why - it's just like our favourite choice, cotton wool!

Using what the woodland already provides helps us avoid relying on cotton wool, which has a surprisingly heavy environmental footprint. Cotton production demands vast amounts of water, pesticides, and energyโ€ฆ all for something we burn in seconds.

By choosing natural tinder like wild clematis, weโ€™re teaching young people to:
โ€ข Work with the land rather than bring in external materials๐ŸŒฟ
โ€ข Reduce waste and respect natural cycles๐ŸŒฟ
โ€ข Notice and value the resources around them๐ŸŒฟ

A small switch, but one with a meaningful ripple effect. Nature gives us what we need โ€” we just have to look closely. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Forest School Fun: Simple Elderflower Cordial! โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒฟ

Here at our training base in Churchdown, Glos the Elder is flowering. Those keen to make cordial need to wait for the flowers to be all open and for a sunny day to maximise flavour.

Capture the taste of early summer with this super easy elderflower cordial โ€“ perfect for making outdoors with your little explorers!
==================
You'll Need (makes approx 1 litre):

Around 20 large elderflower heads (shake gently to remove any little visitors!)
500g sugar (granulated or caster)
1 litre water
2 lemons (unwaxed if possible), zest and juice
(Optional: 1 tsp citric acid โ€“ helps it last longer, but not essential for a quick batch!)
================
Simple Steps for Little Hands:

๐Ÿ’ฎFlower Power: Gently rinse and check your elderflower heads.
๐Ÿ’ฎHeat it Up: In a large pot (if over a campfire, adult supervision is key!), dissolve the sugar in the water over a medium heat. Bring to a gentle boil for a minute, then remove from the heat.
๐Ÿ’ฎLemony Zest: Add the lemon zest and juice to the sugary water.
๐Ÿ’ฎFlower Infusion: Pop the elderflower heads into the warm syrup, ensuring they're submerged. Add the citric acid now if using.
๐Ÿ’ฎSteep & Wait: Cover the pot and leave to infuse for at least 4 hours, or even better, overnight in a cool place.
๐Ÿ’ฎStrain Away: Carefully strain the cordial through a muslin cloth or a very fine sieve into a clean bottle or container.
๐Ÿ’ฎTaste Test! Dilute to taste with water (still or sparkling) and enjoy your homemade woodland refreshment!

Tips for Forest School Leaders:

*Ensure you've correctly identified elderflower!
*Pick on a dry, sunny day when the flowers are at their best.
*Try to remove just the flower heads (white) as the stems contain poisons (like a lot of plants)
*This is a great activity for discussing plant identification, seasonal changes, and even a bit of "potion making" fun!

Happy foraging and cordial making!
