⭐ September ⭐

Is anyone else shocked that it’s the last day of September?

I have been shocking on socials, but behind the scenes it’s been a brilliant start to the academic year.

I have been really enjoying watching everyone develop their descriptive and narrative writing skills. I’ve been enjoying this book. As I keep reminding everyone, writing is a process and there are always ways to improve!

We’ve also been covering lots of anthology poetry and Macbeth to help students prepare for their first round of mock exams.

Amongst all this, my house is STILL a building site 🤪, I ran a half marathon at the weekend and the back to school coughs and colds have been doing the rounds in our house.

I hope everyone else has enjoyed September and is ready for a brilliant October 🍂 🎃 ☕️ .

My daughter is now 11. Do I read to her every night now? No. Do I still read to her? Absolutely YES. I definitely find that it is especially needed on nights when emotions are high or everyone is tired. A brilliant reset for all.

If your child would be adverse to you reading to them then I would recommend sitting on the bed or sofa and reading side by side. Absolute bliss!

Now I’m just off to order my copy of Gruffalo Granny. After a sneaky read this morning, and being certain I’d be underwhelmed, I can confirm it is brilliant.

⭐ 10 minutes a day ⭐

Life is busy, full of distractions and reading should never feel like another ‘job’ to tick off the list.

I love this September challenge of just 10 minutes a day. It really is enough to make a difference!

⭐ Feedback Friday ⭐

I really enjoyed working with this student. He arrived to me knowing he wanted to get Grade 9s in English.

His determination, drive and hard work were what helped him secure these top grades. How willingness to learn, respond to feedback and ask questions were what made him a pleasure to work with. Thank you for trusting me!

I am often asked what does it take? In terms of literature, a student needs to know every text inside out and be confident that whatever question appears, they have the knowledge and insight to tackle it in a convincing way.

I’ve often heard people say you can’t ‘teach’ someone how to get a Grade 9. However, what a teacher or tutor can do is to help build on the classroom knowledge, have deeper discussions and continuously revisit the more nuanced parts of a literary texts.

Best of luck to anyone hoping to achieve those top grades next year. The hard work starts now!

How has it already been a week since GCSE results day?

My Thursday is looking very different. Last week I was on holiday and today I’m deep in renovation life 🫣. See picture 2 for context 🤪.

For lots of people, last Thursday was a day for celebration 🥳. For some, it was disappointment at not achieving the grades they wanted or needed.

Amongst the wins of last week, this was one of my favourites! One student came to me needing to pass his GCSE to continue on with his college course and move to the next level. He didn’t pass his GCSEs whilst in school, so a lot was riding on this result.

I was absolutely delighted to receive this message from his mum.

He was a pleasure to work with and I loved discussing how the ‘exam’ skills would actually benefit him in the career he is working towards.

I do still have some daytime slots still available for a September start and these are perfect for those who are finding themself in a similar situation to this student.

The books my 7 Year old son has been independently reading on holiday. Would I have chosen these for him? No! Does it matter? No!

When I was a teenager, the books I would choose to read were far from ‘literary’. I was obsessed with stealing my mum + dad’s Martina Cole books 🤣. Despite this, I went on to handling complex, rich and important texts with ease and confidence.

My point is, if they’re reading then let them read, let them choose and let them enjoy! Whether that’s a comic, a trashy fantasy book about dragons (who didn’t love Fourth Wing 🤣) or a football facts book.

⭐ Feedback Friday ⭐

Over the coming weeks, I’m going to share some feedback about my tutoring.

This was one of my online students and it was an absolute pleasure to watch his progress. He came to me working at a Grade 2 after his Christmas mocks and he was worried it was too late. He worked his socks off and was rewarded yesterday with some fantastic results. Well done!

A huge congratulations to everyone collecting their GCSE results 🥳 . I am spending the final day of my holiday reading all your wonderful messages.

From people securing college places, enrolling in college, being able to move on to a higher level courses and even securing TOP grade 9s, I am absolutely ecstatic for each and every one of you.

I’ll be sharing some messages in the coming days, but for now, another huge well done and enjoy celebrating 🎉

Was getting up at 6am, whilst on holiday with my family, for a 9 mile run on my bingo card? Absolutely not! 🤪🙈

Despite this, this is exactly what I did this morning. Why? Well I’ve signed up to run a half marathon in September and initially this seemed like a genius idea. Training in the summer months would surely be a dream? What I didn’t factor in was a summer heatwave and a month away from home 🤪.

I could have chosen to sleep in this morning, and lots of other mornings over the past 4 weeks, but the truth is, these small choices will get me over the finish line in September. Consistency, effort and hard work is all I have in my back pocket 🤣. I’m definitely no Amy Hunt, Keeley Hodgkinson or Georgia Hunter-Bell 🙈 and natural ability would have me requiring medical assistance at mile 7 🫣.

Why am I sharing this? Firstly, I really hope those students collecting their GCSE results this week can be proud of their hard work and effort. Please don’t compare your results to anyone else’s, just know that if you tried your best then that is always enough. We all come to things with different circumstances, abilities and desires. I’ve said it before, but I’m so proud of everyone I worked with last year.

Finally, 2027 GCSE students, as we get ready to restart lessons in September, please remember that it is consistency and small micro decisions throughout Y11 that will make the biggest impact in the end. Not last minute cramming before exams begin. Start early, put in the work and be proud of yourself at the end.

Now for lots of water, lots of coffee and a day at the beach with my three wild ones 🏝️ !

Hope everyone is having a wonderful summer. We are loving our travels, exploring beaches and spending crazy amounts of time in the pool.

My kids have been reading lots this summer, but I always notice that getting them writing over the holidays is a different matter.

A few nights ago we started playing ‘consequence’. Give it a search and if you were a 90s/00s child like me then you will definitely remember it 🤣. It’s bringing back some memories for me too 🫣! They absolutely love it and are now asking to play it multiple times a day. It might only be a few lines of writing at a time, but it’s helping to keep their hands strong and ready for September ✍️ .
