🐾 A little Bennie update 🐾

Many of you will have noticed that our happy, tail-wagging friends have have been missing from the office this week.

If you know Bennie, you’ll know that he firmly believes gates, desks and most other forms of containment are merely suggestions. Sadly, while we were away at Nationals this weekend, he attempted his greatest escape yet over a rather large door, and one jump proved to be one jump too many. Despite everyone’s best efforts, his injuries meant he needed surgery to have one of his legs amputated. The surgery went well, and he’s now home recovering.

Over the next few weeks, you may see him out and about around the yard or by the school rather than tucked away in the office, as he’ll probably want to stay close to me while he gets used to life on three legs. Knowing Bennie, he’ll still be desperate to say hello to everyone and his tail will almost certainly be wagging!

As much as we know everyone means well, we’d really appreciate your help by giving him some space. Please don’t come over to stroke him, call him over or try to get his attention, even if he looks like he’d love it or you’re normally his favourite human. The waggy tail is a little misleading at the moment! He’s still very sore, gets tired quickly and needs plenty of time to rest and recover.

Jura has found this week without her idol rather difficult and will almost certainly be keeping a close eye on him too, so it’s best to give them both a bit of space while Bennie heals.

If you have little ones with you, we’d be really grateful if you could help us by explaining that Bennie needs some quiet time for a little while. We know everyone will be curious and want to know how he’s doing, and we promise we’ll keep you updated as he recovers. If you do have any questions, please call or email Tanya in the office, who’ll be happy to help answer any questions from his fans. For now, though, we’re trying to keep things as calm and restful as possible for him.

Thank you, as always, for understanding and for helping us give Bennie the best chance of a smooth recovery. We know he’ll be back greeting everyone, and trying to work out how to escape over the office desk on three legs, before too long. ❤️

What a phenomenal weekend at the RDA National Championships.

The results speak for themselves, but they only tell a fraction of the story.

What people don’t always see are the hours of hard work, the setbacks, the self-doubt, the early mornings, the determination to keep going when not every day feels like a good day, and the courage it takes to walk into an arena and do something that once felt impossible.

This weekend every one of our riders showed exactly what that courage looks like.

Rhys made a last-minute decision to ride the Freestyle to Music with very little time to prepare, but of course rode it flawlessly, taking 3rd place. He also won his Grade 7 Walk & Trot class, qualified for the British Para Dressage Championships this August, and was awarded Best Turned Out.

Stanley arrived at his very first RDA National Championships, having only competed once before, and completely blew us away. He won both of his ridden classes and finished 5th in Best Turned Out. An incredible achievement and thoroughly deserved.

Lilianna faced one of the toughest opponents of all: stage fright. Simply getting to Nationals, getting on her pony and riding took enormous bravery. She also claimed 3rd in Best Turned Out, proving that success isn’t always measured by where you finish, but sometimes by finding the courage to start.

Adding to an already unforgettable weekend, both Rhys and Lilianna were presented with their gold medals after winning their respective sections in this year’s Dressage Anywhere Online Championships.

To every rider, family, volunteer, coach and supporter, thank you. These moments don’t happen by chance. They are built on dedication, perseverance and a refusal to give up.

We must make a special mention to our vet Karen Chan from emersonwatsonvets for everything she does, but especially for Impression who has thrown many challenges at her this year but her hard work, dedication and incredible skills made sure she made it to nationals sound, comfortable and on top form

And they’ve arrived!

Due to the exceptionally hot weather today at Hartpury we packed our ponies off crazy early and they’ve arrived and are settling in ready for a big day tomorrow.

✨ RIDER SPOTLIGHT: LILIANA ✨

Last, but by no means least, meet Lilianna, the youngest member of this year’s RDA Nationals team.

Lili is a quietly inspiring young rider who is simply beautiful to watch. Her quiet determination, gentle nature and stubborn streak make it very hard not to start imagining what the future might hold.

Although naturally shy, beneath that quiet exterior lies a young lady with huge ambitions and an unwavering determination to achieve them. Over the last few years, we’ve watched her grow from a little girl who often spoke through her mum into a young person who can express her own thoughts, feelings and aspirations, although outside of her core team this is still very much a work in progress.

Last year, Lili attended the RDA National Championships for the first time and dominated in all her classes.

Lili has hemiplegic cerebral palsy and epilepsy, and while those conditions present their own challenges, they certainly don’t define her. Horses have given her freedom, independence, confidence and incredible physiotherapy, but perhaps most importantly, they have shown her that dreams which once seemed impossible might just be achievable after all.

Lili shares a very special partnership with a stubborn, cheeky pony called Hollie, kindly loaned by Quest RDA.

Fortunately, the pair are equally stubborn and suit each other perfectly and shine. A recent visit to a mechanical horse training session showed us just how talented she really is. Despite the physical challenges she faces, Lili was quite possibly the most balanced and still rider there, much to the amusement of her trainer, who definitely wasn’t getting on for fear of being shown up!

Honestly, if her journey so far is anything to go by, it would be a brave person who bet against her.

We are incredibly proud of Lili and her journey, and we want to help make her dreams a reality. Lili has all the ingredients to go a very long way and, in a sport where starting young is such an advantage, there is something rather special about being part of the journey from the beginning and seeing just where it might lead.

As we’ve mentioned throughout our rider spotlights, supporting these riders takes a village and comes with no small expense, but even small contributions can make life-changing differences. Whether that’s additional lessons, competition opportunities, specialist equipment or even a four-legged friend, support in all these areas helps these riders, and future stars like them, turn things most of us only dare dream of into realities.

✨ RIDER SPOTLIGHT: RHYS ✨

A face you’re probably all starting to recognise, also heading to the RDA Nationals this week is Rhys.

Rhys is best known for his cheeky grin, infectious enthusiasm and endless determination, winning the hearts of everyone he meets.

From a little boy who absolutely refused to wear a riding hat, to a familiar face on the RDA circuit, Rhys has spent years quietly proving that determination, humour and a healthy amount of stubbornness can achieve extraordinary things.

Rhys’s dream is simple: he wants to be famous, and fair warning, if you see him around he may well ask whether you’re in his fan club.

Living with Autism, ADHD, anxiety, fibromyalgia and a social communication disorder, horses have given Rhys confidence, independence and a place where he truly shines. Two years ago, learning the lead rein walk-trot Introduction to Dressage test was a challenge. Today, he is competing independently in Grade 7 dressage, learning multiple tests and even tackling freestyle.

In fact, Rhys made such an impression that a local polo yard was inspired to gift us an aptly named horse, Impression, so he could continue his journey, and together they have gone from strength to strength. Despite my professional risk assessment that canter was likely to be a step too far, Impression had other ideas. She appears to have decided that teaching Rhys to canter is her personal mission, much to everyone’s surprise given that she generally has very little interest in cantering for anyone else. To everyone’s surprise, including Rhys’s, he seems to have discovered that canter is actually rather fun.

Rhys’s dream is simple.

He wants to be famous.

And honestly, if his journey so far is anything to go by, or the extensive collection of rosettes and trophies, it would be a brave person who bet against him.

✨ RIDER SPOTLIGHT: STANLEY ✨
This week, three very special members of our competition team will travel to the RDA National Championships, so let’s introduce them. Today our spotlight is on Stanley.

Stanley is best known for his infectious enthusiasm, boundless energy and the ability to ask your name so many times that you start to question whether you’ve actually introduced yourself. From the moment we met him, his love for horses and sheer excitement were impossible to miss.

Our journey with Stanley began when his brother turned up for a lesson accompanied by a bouncy young man with a clear passion for horses. Stanley was keen, we were keen, and putting him on a horse seemed like the only sensible thing to do.

Although Stanley grew up riding with Quest RDA, he sadly aged out of their programme and had to take a break from riding. Following the RDA motto of “It’s what you can do”, his return to the saddle has shown Stanley that life isn’t defined by his struggles. Instead, horses have given him a newfound confidence, determination and the belief that he possesses many talents and abilities.

The journey hasn’t always been straightforward. A sudden panic before Regionals when it dawned on his mum that this was, in fact, not an online competition added a potential complication.

Unbeknown to us, a previous RDA competition at Windsor had ended with Stanley refusing to mount, so understandably there were a few nerves, but the entries were in and Stanley was keen.

Despite this newfound anxiety, he did exactly as we believed he could. He put on the show jacket, fastened his collar, climbed on board and absolutely smashed it.
From pirate treasure at X to half moons instead of circles, Stanley has put in an incredible amount of work and, little by little, everything started to click. So, instead of the anxious, shy rider we feared we might see at Regionals, who should turn up but the bouncing ball of excitement and determination we all know and love.

We are incredibly proud of Stanley and his journey, and we want to help make his dreams a reality and continue showing him just how much he is capable of achieving. There is something rather special about being part of a journey right from the beginning, and we have no doubt that Stanley’s story is only just getting started.

Equally, if you have, or are, a rider with big dreams who is struggling to find opportunities, get in touch. Spaces on next year’s team are limited, but “It’s what you can do” and we will always support and signpost where we can.

🌞 Heatwave Update 🌞

Did we move to Spain overnight and nobody mentioned it? 🥵 With the extreme heat and red weather warning, unless the forecast changes dramatically, lessons until Friday will be swapping saddles for stable management.

Fear not – thanks to our somewhat temperamental air conditioning (which currently seems to be winning its battle with the weather), we’ll be keeping cool indoors while making the most of some valuable horsey learning.

Stable management isn’t just “the bit before the riding”. Understanding feeding, health, tack, first aid, behaviour and daily care helps riders become true horsemen and horsewomen. Better horse care makes better riders, and it’s amazing how much confidence and knowledge can be gained without putting anyone – human or horse – at risk of melting into the arena surface.

Our horses will be spending the hottest parts of the day chilling in the field where there’s a lovely breeze and plenty of shade. They’ve had added electrolytes and will be monitored closely to make sure they stay comfortable and safe. Honestly, the horses want for nothing… but how many of us humans have remembered to drink our water let alone electrolytes? 😅

If anyone is off work or school and would like an early morning lesson, we’re happy to move lesson times earlier in the day while it’s cooler, so just get in touch and we’ll do our best to accommodate.

If there’s anything specific you’d like to learn about ponies, pop us an email before your lesson and we’ll tailor the session to you. Whether it’s colours, feeding, clipping, tack, plaiting, first aid, behaviour or simply “why do they do that?”, we’ll do our best to cover it.

We’ll keep an eye on the forecast, but for now it’s less “rise and shine” and more “hide and hydrate”. Stay cool everyone! Please bring plenty of water and remember to wear your suncream🐴🥵☀️💦

What an amazing day today. We took and Stanley down to for the regionals, and they smashed it out the park. All 3 riders won all their classes and have qualified for nationals at today was Lilis first time off the lead in countryside challenge, and Rhys went off lead for the full day! I couldn’t be more proud of them and our new member of the team Stanley! Thank you for lending Lili Hollie. A huge thanks to the team back home who help all this happen. And thanks of course to who have finally gone on the jackets! and a special thanks to again for all her help!

This weekend we took lilianas_equestrian_life down to see Amanda at tilefieldequestrian and to meet the inspirational Para Dressage zoe_squirrell Zoe and Amanda introduced Lili to the biggest, but arguably safest horse she’s ever ridden Tallula! Zoe gave us a quick demo, and Tallula and Amanda worked together to help Lili understand her body when she’s onboard to help her and Quest RDA Group s Hollie at RDA South East Region regionals this week! What an incredible opportunity and experience for us all, and I don’t know if you see the screen… but this kid is straighter than most of us! A huge thank you to both Zoe and Amanda for an unforgettable experience! We will be back! We can’t be more grateful to Zoe for all the help and advice she’s given us over the last couple of months and facilitating this opportunity! I would say but realistically Tallula is 😅🤣. ❤️❤️❤️
