Abbeyfield School Shines at the Athelstan Festival of Speech and Debate 2026!

We are incredibly proud of our Key Stage 3 students who represented Abbeyfield School at this year's Athelstan Festival of Speech and Debate (AFSaD) 2026, hosted by Malmesbury School.
This was Abbeyfield School's first time taking part in this Trust-wide event, where we competed against four other secondary schools. Accompanied by Mr Evans (School Librarian) and Mr Norgrove, our talented team of 11 students took part across every category, including Speech, Poetry Recital, Dramatic Reading, and Debating.
Our students achieved some fantastic results:

πŸ₯‡ Gold Medal – Poetry Recital
A Year 8 student earned the Gold Medal for her outstanding performance of Rollercoasters Make Me Sad by Em Beihold, delivering the spoken poetic lyrics of the song with confidence, emotion, and flair.

πŸ₯‰ Bronze Medal – Speech Competition
Madeline B in Year 7 secured the Bronze Medal with her thought-provoking speech: "Why Social Media Should Be Banned for Under 13s?"

🎀 Debate Competition Success
Both Abbeyfield debate teams performed brilliantly throughout the competition, with both teams reaching the semi-finals. The debate motion that our student had to debate about: β€œ2026 is the National Year of Reading. Is celebrating reading a waste of time in today's world?”

In an impressive achievement, the two Abbeyfield teams faced each other in the semi-final, guaranteeing the school a place in the final.
Our Team A then progressed to the final, where they faced a strong and experienced team from Sir William Romney's School. Although they narrowly missed out on first place, they delivered an excellent performance and finished as deserving runners-up. Congratulations to Luke, Ethan, Alex and George for this fantastic achievement.
A huge thank you goes to Mr Evans, our School Librarian, for organising all the logistics and supporting the preparation and coaching of our debate teams. We would also like to thank the teachers in the English Department for mentoring and encouraging students across the other competition categories.

At Abbeyfield School, we believe that literacy and oracy are powerful tools for success. Events such as AFSaD help students develop confidence, communication skills, critical thinking, and creativityβ€”skills that will benefit them throughout their education and beyond. We are incredibly proud of every student who took part and represented the school with enthusiasm, courage, and determination.

Well done to all our competitorsβ€”you were outstanding ambassadors for Abbeyfield School!

We recently sent some of our talented Year 12 mathematicians to Malmesbury School to take part in a highly challenging Maths Challenge competition.

Facing strong competition from teams packed with exceptionally bright young mathematicians, our students rose to the occasion brilliantly. We are delighted to share that one of our teams won the entire competition!

Congratulations to all of the students involved – a fantastic achievement and a testament to their hard work, teamwork and mathematical ability. Thank you Malmesbury School for hosting!

Keep an eye on these four; we have no doubt that they have a very bright future ahead of them!

This short clip highlights just some of the incredible opportunities made possible through the PE & Sport Premium. It shows the positive impact of having dedicated School Sports Coordinators and the amazing Sports Ambassadors at Abbeyfield School, who help inspire, encourage and support younger pupils to be active and enjoy taking part in sport.
It's about so much more than competition, it's about building confidence, developing leadership skills, encouraging teamwork and creating positive experiences that help children develop a lifelong love of being active.
A huge well done to everyone who took part and to all the staff, volunteers and Sports Ambassadors who helped make the day such a success! πŸ‘πŸŽ‰

What an incredible way to celebrate National School Sport Week! πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸŽ‰

We were delighted to welcome our Trust primary schools for a fantastic day of sport, with an amazing 480 Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils taking part in a variety of fun, inclusive activities. It was wonderful to see so much enthusiasm, teamwork and smiling faces throughout the day!

Our Year 7 students had the opportunity to trial the role of Sports Ambassador, gaining valuable leadership experience while supporting the younger pupils throughout the day.
A special mention goes to our experienced Year 8 and Year 9 Sports Ambassadors, who were fantastic role models for the Year 7 students. They led by example, offering guidance, encouragement and support, helping the newer ambassadors grow in confidence.
A huge congratulations also to our Year 10 and Year 12 Sports Ambassadors, who took on the lead roles in organising and delivering the event. Their professionalism, leadership and teamwork ensured the day ran smoothly and was an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
Thank you to Wiltshire FA and the Bath rugby foundation for being part of the event and national sports week.

Thank you to all of our pupils, staff and Trust primary schools for making the event such a success. It was a brilliant celebration of National School Sport Week, showcasing the power of sport to inspire, build confidence and bring our school community together.

National Sports Week Spotlight – Inspiring Staff at Abbeyfield School πŸ„β€β™€οΈ

National Sports Week, we're celebrating the incredible sporting journeys of our staff and highlighting that sport is truly for everyone, at any age and stage of life.
Today, we're shining the spotlight on Mrs Swinney and her passion for paddle boarding.

Mrs Swinney first discovered paddle boarding in 2020 after watching a group of paddlers on the water at Pulteney Weir in Bath. What started with an inflatable paddle board and local evening paddles on the rivers and canals of Bath and Wiltshire soon developed into a much bigger adventure!

As her confidence and skills grew, Mrs Swinney began taking on longer challenges and invested in a 14ft carbon fibre race board. Her dedication saw her compete in events such as the Norfolk Broads Ultra, a gruelling 72km challenge over two days, where she achieved an impressive 10th place in the Women's Elite Race. She followed this up with another 10th place finish in the Head of the Dart Elite Race, earning a world ranking for two consecutive years.

Away from racing, Mrs Swinney enjoys white water paddling, night paddles illuminated by lights, and overnight camping adventures exploring new waterways. Her favourite paddles are along the British coastline, discovering new places from the water.
The most inspiring part of Mrs Swinney's story is that she discovered this new sport in her 40s and went on to achieve success at a national level. Her message to our students is simple:
"Always look out for new opportunities and try new things – you never know what impact it could have on your life."
Paddle boarding is a sport that is accessible, social, and a fantastic way to enjoy being active while connecting with nature.

πŸ‘ Thank you, Mrs Swinney, for sharing your journey and for inspiring our students to be active, adventurous, and open to new experiences.
