One of the biggest mistakes I see with science notebooks?

We make them too perfect. You know what I mean 😁

Perfect headings.
Perfect templates.
Perfect teacher-created notes.
Perfect pages for students to copy.

But a science notebook isn’t supposed to be a scrapbook of everything the teacher taught.

It should show what the STUDENT is thinking.

Their first model.
Their observations.
The evidence they chose.
The idea they changed.
The question they still have.
The explanation they can make now that they couldn’t make before.

That’s why I’m not trying to create 30 identical notebooks.

I’m trying to create 30 notebooks that make 30 students’ thinking visible.

Students can still have structure. They can still create beautiful pages. They can still use color, pictures, and text.

But the goal isn’t the page.

The goal is the THINKING.

What an amazing training experience!

Just spent two days with Dr. Victor Sampson learning all things Argument-Driven Inquiry, straight from the person who created it!

If you don’t own one of his new books, get it.

ADI moves students past “follow the steps, write a conclusion” and into building real arguments from their own data — then defending them to their peers.

Think about the lab that is the most blah in a unit and replace it with an ADI lab.

Grateful for the two days. Already thinking about how this pairs with notebooking and templates in my own work. ADI templates out all labs/activities-which is a notebooking win!

Not necessarily a new job.

Not necessarily an administrative position.

Can we talk about the start of the school year and using notebooks?

I know exactly what’s going through your head right now.

“Notebooks sound great, but I’ll start them next year. I don’t have time to change anything right now.”

I’ve been there. The first few weeks feel like you’re just trying to remember everyone’s names and figure out the copy machine again.

But here’s what I’ve learned after doing this for over 20
years. You don’t need a fresh year to start. You don’t need your whole curriculum redesigned. You don’t need it to be perfect.

You just need one week.

Pick the one where students are copying your notes word for word instead of thinking for themselves. Swap in one template. See what happens.

That’s it.

Small changes now beat a big overhaul you never get to.

One of the biggest misconceptions about science notebooks?

A beautiful notebook = a good notebook.

Nope.

I don’t want 30 notebooks that all look exactly the same.

I don’t want students spending their science time copying my notes.

And I definitely don’t want notebooks filled with pages of things I printed, cut out, and asked students to glue in.

I want to open a student’s science notebook and see their thinking.

Their questions.
Their models.
Their observations.
Their evidence.
Their ideas changing over time.

A phenomenal science notebook isn’t a place where students record what the teacher knows.

It’s a place where students figure things out.

And when we make that shift, notebooks become so much more than a classroom organization tool. They become one of the best windows we have into student thinking.
