How do you know students really learned?

“What can you explain now—and where does your work show that?”

A completed science notebook page can hide a lot.

Every box is filled in. The diagram is colored. The vocabulary is correct.

But can the student explain what’s happening?

Before I call a page finished, I want students to do one more thing: point to a part of their work and explain why it matters.

Not “This is DNA polymerase.”

“What is DNA polymerase doing here, and what would happen if it didn’t?”

That small shift gives me something I can actually respond to. It also gives students a chance to notice when they’ve written the right words without making sense of them yet.

Being a great science teacher and leading great science instruction are two different skill sets.

You may know how to get YOUR students talking, modeling, revising their thinking, and making sense of science.

But how do you help those practices spread beyond your own classroom?

How do you support another teacher without telling them how to teach?

How do you help a department move forward when everyone is in a different place?

That’s instructional leadership.

And you don’t need to be a department chair, coach, TOSA, or administrator to do it.

Sometimes you’re simply the teacher everyone comes to and asks:

“Can you show me how you did that?”

That’s who I created the Science Leadership Academy for. 💜

This fall, we’re using strategies Ambitious Science Teaching as our instructional anchor while learning how to strengthen science instruction—not just in our own classrooms, but beyond them.

Your science notebooks probably don’t need 20 different templates. 😬

And listen—I love a good template. I’ve made hundreds of them!

But I also know how easy it is to spend your entire Sunday creating the “perfect” notebook page…only to watch students rush through it, fill in the boxes, and completely miss the thinking you wanted them to do.

I’ve been there.

The problem isn’t that templates are bad.

It’s that sometimes we start by asking:

“What should this notebook page look like?”

Instead of:

“What do I want my students to figure out?”

That one change completely shifts the notebook experience.

Once you know the thinking you want students to do, then you can decide what support they need:

A model?
Color to show connections?
A chance to talk before writing?
Evidence to organize?
A simple prompt?
Or maybe just a blank page with room to think?

Sometimes students need a template. Sometimes they don’t.

The goal isn’t for every notebook to look perfect—or even the same.

The goal is for students’ thinking to become visible.

That’s exactly what I teach inside Phenomenal Science Teaching: how to move from “What should students glue into their notebooks?” to “What should students be figuring out?”

“How did you get your students talking like that?”

“Can I see how you planned that lesson?”

That teacher may not have a leadership title. They may not run the department or facilitate the PLC.

But people trust them. They notice what’s happening in their classroom—and they want to learn from it.

That is instructional leadership.
