Throughout this week we have celebrated Chinese New Year. At Colerne pre school we enjoy celebrating festivals from around the world it is a great way to help build children’s knowledge about the understanding of the world. On Tuesday we had a very exciting visit from Trisha who came into to create some wonderful helicopter stories. Helicopter stories is a great way of promoting children’s communication and language it also extends on children’s imagination giving them a chance to express their stories and then having the chance to act them out with their friends.

On Wednesday the children created some amazing dragons using different resources. We also watched a video on the dancing dragon lions and then created some dragon necklaces. The children carefully thread the pasta onto the pipe cleaners using their hand eye coordination. After the children had finished we used golden and red paint to decorate our dragon necklaces.

Thursday we started of the morning with an exciting baking activity. The children got the chance to create their own dragon they did this by icing their rice crispy with red icing and decorating it with some sweets. Some children explained that their dragon had “horns” and “two eyes”. This activity is a great way to help children with their listening and attention as the children had to carefully place the icing on to their dragon and then use their fine motor skills to carefully place the sweets on top. In rising 5s we watched a video on how children celebrate Chinese New Year this is a great learning experience for the children to see what they do in different festivals. The children also asked to watch the dragon dancing on the board and do some dragon dancing. The children then had the opportunity to try on different outfits and look at the amazing resources. What a great start of the week we have had! First all the children enjoyed playing with the freshly made playdough this is a great sensory activity to develop the children’s muscles in there hands and fingers, through squashing and squeezing the playdough. Later we enjoyed getting creative with paints and paintbrushes, which soon turned into the children exploring the paints with there hands, creating lots of messy fun! Wednesday all of the children enjoyed an exciting sensory activity were the children got to enjoy mixing the different coloured chia seeds together and painting with them to create wonderful pictures!

What a fantastic Thursday the children also got the chance to enjoy the chia seeds in the tuff tray in the garden.where the children used their fine motor skills to scoop the chia seeds with the spoons and carefully empty them into different containers. Sensory play is an amazing way to help children calm themselves and also stimulate the brain. For rising 5s we have been learning about different emotions. After watching a short song about feelings All of the children enjoyed making emotion masks and used colours that represented how they were feeling. After this everyone had a really good go at practising writing all the letters of there name. Finally we finished off the session with some calm yoga! What a busy day we have had! Hannah and Aneesa Xx

The children have had great fun learning all about space this afternoon in rising fives! After listening to a song all about planets and the solar system the children enjoyed a mathematical activity where they created a rocket using numbers 1-5! After creating there rocket they draw different planets around the edge and used tissue paper to make the fire at the bottom! Finally we all wrapped up and headed outside and pretended to be rocket ships zooming around the garden! Hannah and Aneesa Xx

Yesterday the children had a fantastic time in the garden riding around on the bikes and scooters. This is an amazing way for children to build on their gross motor skills and also helps the children negotiate space while playing with their peers. Today the children had the white boards out and used their tripod grips to carefully try and write their names out. Some children were also able to point out the single letters in their name and correctly name them. For example one child said “my name has a”. This activity is a great way to help the children expand on their phonics. We also did some tizzy time with all the children on the carpet. Tizzy time is an intervention that can help children with their language and listening and attention. Aneesa and Hannah 😊

After this all of the children practiced writing there letters of there names using the whiteboards and whiteboard pens. Finally they enjoyed a fine miter flower making activity! What a festive afternoon we have had during rising fives. The children started off by watching a short clip describing the story of the nativity and then we moved on to the table where all the children had a really good go at writing the first letter of there name, using the whiteboards. After this they practised there scissor skills by cutting around a Christmas tree shape then they decorated there trees using a variety of Christmas craft resources. We look forward to seeing you all again soon for some more festive fun! Hannah and Aneesa 😊

What a wonderful Thursday yesterday the children spent the morning create some fantastic baubles they used pens and tissue paper with some shiny gems. This is a great activity to promote the children to use their fine motor skills when it comes to holding the pen in a tripod grip and carefully peeling the small gems of and sticking them to the baubles.
During the afternoon in rising 5’s we continued the Christmas festivities we first watched the story of the snowman and snow dog and took this idea and created some snow men using Cotten wool balls. The children used their small muscles in their hands to grip the pen and draw around a circle stencil. The children then cut out their snow men and decorated them using Googly eyes and a small orange triangle for the nose some children even added buttons on the snow man. We also did some Christmas yoga to help the children develop their gross motor skills and listening and attention.
What a Christmas packed day on a lovely Friday the Children helped decorate the Christmas tree they all carefully hung the baubles onto the tree and wrapped the tinsil around the tree. Hannah and Aneesa 😊

Today we were so lucky to have Trisha come in and run a Helicopter stories session with all of the children! Helicopter stories are a fantastic way to promote the children’s creativity and develop there literacy skills. Many of the children told Trisha a story and then later on acted there stories out with there peers.
Today the children also enjoyed exploring in the sand tray using different pots to transport the sand and tip and pour the sand into different sized containers. As well as this they have loved using there problem solving skills to solve the puzzles!

At this age children can have very big emotions and struggle to regulate them, so today we decided to focus are rising five session on emotions. We did this through various activities! First we listened to the feelings song, using Makaton signs along side. We then asked each of the children how they were feeling and what makes them feel happy and what makes them feel sad and then showed them different colours and asked how each of the colours made them feel. Following on from this they all chose a different colour and painted a face to represent the feeling that reminded them of that colour.
What a fab day we have had! Hannah and Aneesa X

What a fantastic Thursday over the past week lots of children have been interested in rainbows so we wanted to do a lovely art activity following the childrens interests. The children used their scissor skills to cut the tissue paper and stick it onto their rainbows. Some children used their fine motor skills to carefully scrunch and roll the tissue paper up which formed small balls. This afternoon the children started of rising fives with some phonics this is an amazing activity to help the children build on their vocabulary and listen to the way the letters sound. We then went on to some scissor activities some children chose to do the zigzag lines and the other children did the straight lines. Practicing Scissor skills help the children build their hand strength and also develops their hand eye cordination. We also did an activity that included subitising this involved the children looking at the amount of animals and writing the number. We had lots of mathematical language. What a wonderful day.
