Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a movement and planning difficulty cause speech to be a struggle. It is rare affecting approximately 1 to 2 children per 1,000 in the general population. I’ve learnt about an evidence-based treatment approaches known as DTTC, Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing shown to help 3-6yr olds.
I can’t wait to use more new skills with my kids in September. 🗣️ 👄 🫶🏻

📱🗣️💻Therapy Thursday 📱🗣️💻
Therapy, coaching and assessments are all in a days work! So I thoughts I’d show some examples of the types therapy I do with my kids from today.

Whether they are using alternative access or not we work together on developing speech and language. Today it was all in schools 🏫

💥 Onomatopoeia! 💥
What a fancy name.
It just means words that sound like noises.
Think of words like BOOM, SPLASH, or WOOF! 🐶

Why should you use them with your kids:✨

🗣️ They are easy to say. Kids will tend to say “beep beep” before they say “car.”
🗣️ it builds knowledge of sounds ready for speech.
🔗 it helps build links to words for storing and word retrieval.
😁 They are fun! They make kids laugh and smile.Using silly sounds bonds you with your child. 🥰

Tip Tuesday - merging a split keyboard.
It’s happened to a few of my clients iPads now and it’s easy to fix.

I would also recommend adding guided access. This helps the AAC Iser stay in the app until he/ she can navigate through the app confidently and they have symbolic understanding.

Did you know there was such a thing called ‘Peer-mediated AAC Modelling??’ I’ve just read all about it in the recent AAC Journal. Plus it’s evidence-based! So why are we not doing more of it??

Is it because the adults don’t feel confident to use the device?

Is it because we haven’t given the peers opportunities?

Is it because we are worried that the peers will take over??

Let’s provide structured times in main stream to explore these opportunities and find out 💻📱🖥️

Just catching up with some learning from real life experiences and really lovely to hear from

I can’t get enough of this. It is absolutely essential we hear from those that actually use AAC to shape our thinking, help with decision making and future for them and us.
