SHARE THEIR ENTHUSIASM

Ok so Pokemon are not my specialist subject....but this curious little mind loves them. She may not love writing but when I shared her enthusiasm by getting out the pokemon book...well all of a sudden we were writing, researching, describing and labelling.

YOU LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERYDAY

As we break for the festive holidays I hope your curious young minds get a chance to relax and enjoy some down time.
Don't worry about them "falling behind"....there's opportunities for real life reading & maths everywhere!

Here's something I left out for my own curious young person

GUILTY....I'M A BOOKWORM

Reading should be an enjoyable experience where we can get immersed into imaginary worlds....but when I'm working with some young people this isn't the case.
Even our youngest curious folk have already decided there's not much fun about school books.

Freedom and independent choice is so important when their whole worlds are decided for them between 9-3pm.

BUT WHAT IF....
We encouraged choosing interesting stories or biographies, shared reading graphic novels or relaxed in the evening with an audio book?

Our curious folks might just find the love of literature again.

DOODLE POWER 💪

There is something empowering and mind focusing about the doodle....freedom to just let the pen move, moments for your mind to just focus on colours and shapes

As the school term goes on, your curious minded children get tired. Their brains get full of spellings, letter formation, maths....so let them doodle.

⭐⭐Bonus....they'll develop fine motor skills by using a variety of different pens & pencils too ⭐⭐

SOMETHING IN THE AIR?

Lots of our curious minds have struggled this week and I can't put my finger on why. Maybe it's something in the air? Maybe they've been tired or maybe the dark, rainy evenings are upsetting them.

BUT what I do know is that I will ALWAYS meet your child where they are emotionally and academically right now.

Yes that might mean more finger gym, mindfulness, yoga or music than usual but I'd rather get 1 great moment of learning than add to their worries.

Let's encourage our curious young people to be focused on well being as well as learning

PHONICS BUTTONS

For emergent/new readers Phonics buttons are a great way to support independent reading and writing.

Encouraging a child to recognise phonemes, digraphs and trigraphs breaks words down into known chunks.

Schools use a variety of different schemes to develop phonics knowledge but we love any strategy that supports independence and confidence!

I'll be using these sentence and picture combinations to shared write very short story this week!

POWER OF PLAY

The young and curious folk I'm working with are LOVING the game Boggle right now.

It's supporting our word recognition, spelling and phonics knowledge, handwriting, adventurous vocabulary use and of course is FUN!

One person asked me "why doesn't this feel like learning?" And I couldn't help but smile.

Play, explore, learn....always be curious.

🔎CHOICE

One of the integral parts of my tutoring sessions is that young people feel they have choice in how and what they learn.

They (and I) know you have signed them up with a specific aim in mind (handwriting, times tables confidence, SPaG support) BUT it's also important that they know they have choices within each session.

🗒It might be choosing which order to do the activities
🎨It might be choosing how to present their ideas
🧠It might be choosing to take 5 minutes to get their minds focused at the start.

Making their own choices supports your young person to become independent learners, confident in their ability to manage their own tasks and timetables. All skills which are needed for Secondary school and beyond.

READY STEADY ROLL 🎲

Bringing number recognition and high frequency words together in a game of Bingo today.

This could be made easier with initial sounds, digraphs and trigraphs.

Or made trickier with ambitious vocabulary and adding 2 digits from the dice together.

Learning new words should be fun 😍

Bubble Timer

For most of my tutoring set ups you will be able to spot my green bubble timer.
Not only is it very calming (and slightly hypnotic) watching the green slime drip in bubbles to the bottom, but it also supports our learning in other ways!

Each session usually starts with some bubble timer mindfulness colouring to support young people to relax after a busy day.

The timer also helps me to show our young people that we won't be working on a task FOREVER, which helps to reassure them.

Beating the bubbles games are also hugely popular....how many number sentences can you write before the bubbles run out? Can you pick up all the pom poms before the bubbles run out? How many shapes can you make on the geoboard before the bubbles run out.

In our opinion everyone should get to enjoy a bubble timer 😍

PHONICS SPLAT

We found a new use for spatula's and spoons today to support some phase 5 phonics learning.....Splat Game!

1. Write down the words on paper (spellings, common exception words, phonics patterns)
2. Play in at least pairs.
3. Take turns to segment any word from the list.
4. Splat the word when you see it and score a point.

Today it was 1 v 9 to my little pal.

LETS GO TO THE GYM!

Ok so I mean the finger gym 😂
The muscle strength and finger dexterity for good pencil control needs to be worked on regularly.

Tasks like buttons on shirts, zips on coats, counting out coins all help.

This one with tweezers is a favourite! We can use it for counting, colours, play hungry hippos style against each other.

I wish going to the gym was always so much fun 🙈
