Chichester Nursery School

A few times in holiday club this year we have enjoyed using the parachute, and we couldn’t finish out the school year without getting it out again. The children were able to recall their favourite games, such as hiding under the parachute to become a mushroom🍄, and shaking the parachute to bounce a ball on top. 🥎 . It’s always fun to explore new things at nursery but sometimes something familiar can be just as enjoyable and worthy of our learning time! I wonder if we’ll revisit another favourite activity again this week? What could it be?

We can’t think of a better way to start the week by talking about and looking at books! 📚
Inspired by the children’s desire to know more about bumblebees, we took a trip to the library to see if we could find some books about bees. We found plenty of books about insects and wildlife and the children also found books that followed their own interests such as books about fairies or machines!
Following on from this we looked at some of our story sacks, a particular favourite was ‘Dear Zoo’. 🐒🦁

Family Craft Event this coming week, 18th August

Today during holiday club there were some discussions about what our grown ups do whilst we’re having fun at nursery. Some of the children recalled times they have been to visit their grown ups work and what they do. This then prompted the interest of making our own office. We made many important phone calls and did lots of typing on our computers, sending emails. One child commented “it’s got a super low battery, it’s nearly gone.” When they were typing out their email. So some children moved onto mark making to write their messages on paper, using paint and pencils since as we all know technology doesn’t last forever but trusty pen and paper is always there. 📞👷‍♂️🖇️

It’s been a very warm week here at nursery and whilst we love nothing more than running around and being active, it’s hard to stay cool that way. So in order to stretch and exercise our bodies in a safer way, we decided to do some yoga. The children loved stretching their arms up to the sky on their tiptoes, it started many discussions about what we could do with our bodies. In one pose we became like trees in the wind, and in another we embraced our inner warrior! How clever! 🌲🧘🧘‍♀️. We then sat down and took some deep breaths to find our zen, we smelt the flowers and blew out the candles on a pretend birthday cake!
I wonder what other things we can do to keep ourselves cool?

This holiday club we’ve been interested in trying out different sports, a favourite has been football ⚽️ The children loved being able to try on football kits and take it in turns to be the goalie and strikers, this encouraged sharing, turn taking and excellent communication skills! 🥅

We have also loved practicing our hand eye coordination through throwing bean bags in to squares and balancing them on our heads!

We had such a lovely end to our second full week of holiday club! The children have been really engaged in learning more about our caterpillar friend, Squishie, who we found on Monday. This included reading The Hungry Caterpillar to understand the cycle of life for a caterpillar. The children then became interested in butterflies 🦋! This showed up both inside and outside, inside the children began painting their own butterflies, whilst in the garden we used big materials to turn ourselves into butterflies. It was such a magical experience to flutter around the garden, pretending to fly.
As we fly into the weekend, we can’t help but wonder what exciting new adventures we will have next week! Happy Friday everyone! 🐛🦋

Following our exciting visitor on Monday - Squishie the caterpillar! The children have continued to look for him, going on many bug hunts over the last two days, finding lots of different insects and hiding our own toy bugs for others to find. 🕷️🐞🐝🦟🦗

They have also been making their own representations of Squishie and making him a home to live in, using paint, junk modelling and play dough. We are excited to see where Squishie leads us next! 🐛

Whilst playing in the garden today we found a caterpillar 🐛 The children immediately took an interest, they lovingly named the caterpillar Squishy and began talking about how they could build him a home. We researched what caterpillars like eat and then began searching around the garden for supplies to make Squishy a home, the children suggested ideas such as sticks, leaves and water in case he was thirsty.

The children used the book ‘The very hungry caterpillar’ as a reference and told us that he might like to “eat cake” but we soon found out using a fact book that they eat silver Birch leaves, so we gave squishy them to eat instead. The children enjoyed reading the hungry caterpillar and they also decided to make their own caterpillars by mark making using pencils and paint, mixing colours to match the colour of Squishy 🐛🍃
