Developing Your Child's Reading at Home 28/06/2026

๐Ÿ“– Developing Your Child's Reading at Home, our free guide for families

Reading is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children, and it doesn't take a formal programme, expensive resources or hours of structured time. It takes intention, consistency, and a home where books are visible, valued and talked about.

Written by our team of reading experts, this practical guide for families of primary-age children covers:

โœจ Making books part of everyday life โœจ Building a reading habit that actually sticks โœจ Choosing the right books, and supporting reluctant readers โœจ 10 questions to spark a real conversation about any book

Whether your little one is just beginning to decode words or heading towards secondary school, there's something here for you.

Developing Your Child's Reading at Home Elite Tutors' free guide to nurturing young readers at home: everyday habits, choosing the right books, and 10 questions to spark a love of reading.

One of the most powerful things we can do for a child is help them fall in love with reading. ๐Ÿ“š

Not for the grades, although that matters too. But for the quieter things. The curiosity. The confidence. The ability to sit with a story and lose themselves in it completely. โœจ

I have been thinking about this a lot lately, and I wrote a new article exploring what the future of reading might look like ๐Ÿ”ฎ, why there is a real difference between listening to a book and reading one, and some simple things families can do to protect that reading habit at home. ๐Ÿก

I hope it is a useful and reassuring read, wherever you and your child are with books right now. ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ“š Happy World Book Day from our team! What's your favouritebook from your childhood?

We asked everyone in the Elite Tutors team to share the book that stayed with them โ€” and here's what they said:

๐ŸฆŠ Kae loves Fantastic Mr Fox (a Roald Dahl classic for a reason!)
๐ŸŽญ Tina fell in love with stories through performing Romeo & Juliet
โšก Sophie is forever a Harry Potter girl
๐Ÿฐ Mel was moved by When Hi**er Stole Pink Rabbit โ€” a story about courage and family

Here's something we feel strongly about: loving stories is human nature. Every child, including children with dyslexia, deserves to experience the magic of a great story.

If your child finds reading stressful, you don't have to push through the stress to get to the joy. Try audiobooks. Listen together in the car. Read aloud at bedtime. Watch them fall in love with characters and worlds, because the story getting in matters far more than how it gets in.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ We're hosting a FREE talk for parents on 18th March all about supporting your dyslexic child, including how to help them enjoy stories without the stress.

Does something feel "not quite right" with your child's learning? ๐Ÿ’™

Many parents sense it long before dyslexia is ever mentioned by a school.

Maybe your child avoids reading, gets upset over written work, or shows frustration that feels out of proportion. Perhaps they can explain ideas brilliantly out loud, but struggle to get them down on paper.

These signs are not about failure.

The sooner those concerns are understood and addressed, the easier it is to protect confidence, and their love of learning. โœจ

We'd love to help. Join us at our free dyslexia talk on Wednesday March 18th at 7:30pm, where our qualified dyslexia assessor and expert team are on hand to answer your questions in a friendly, welcoming space.

Did you know that students who read from paper score significantly higher on comprehension tests than those reading the same material on screens? ๐Ÿ“š

A meta-analysis of 49 studies confirms it: physical books are better for learning.

But here's what really matters for schools...

When students can't access text at their age level:

โŒ They disengage in History
โŒ They struggle in Science exams
โŒ They fall behind in Maths
โŒ Behavioural issues follow (not defianceโ€”self-protection)

Reading ability is the strongest predictor of academic success across ALL subjects. It also predicts life outcomes: employment, earnings, and future opportunities.

Yet many students reach secondary school without the stamina for GCSE texts. They've grown up on TikTok and Instagramโ€”rapid, visual, over in seconds. Then we hand them Shakespeare and wonder why they switch off.

The gap isn't just academic. It's emotional.

Imagine stumbling over words in front of your peers, year after year. Shame becomes avoidance. Avoidance becomes defiance.

School leaders prioritising sustained reading with physical books report:

โœ… Improved Progress 8 scores
โœ… Reduced disruption
โœ… Better post-16 progression

For students significantly behind, one-to-one intervention provides the privacy to rebuild both skills and confidence.

Reading shapes everything. When we improve literacy, we improve outcomes across every measure.

Addressing literacy isn't an add-on to school improvementโ€”it's the foundation. ๐Ÿ’ก

Why Learning History Matters, Especially This November 11/11/2025

This year, on Remembrance Day, I'm mindful of the power of stories and the significance of learning History in shaping our identities.

I absolutely remember my grandmother recounting her experiences working in a uniform factory, recalling the night that the factory across the street was bombed (they were lucky). My grandad shared his story of being captured in Normandy and becoming a German POW- how he hid a knife in his sock and how he and his battalion were lined up by the Nazi's on a train track hoping they didn't find the knife and all be killed. I heard these stories first hand, from people who were there. It's sad to think these personal accounts are fading as our WWII veterans pass on, highlighting the importance of teaching children to learn, remember, and reflect.

History is not merely about remembrance; it equips children with essential skills, including:
โ€ข Critical thinking and questioning evidence
โ€ข Analyzing cause and consequence
โ€ข Strong communication and argumentation skills
โ€ข Understanding context, perspective, and empathy
โ€ข Research and interpretation skills
โ€ข Making connections between past and present
These skills empower students across all subjects, from English and Politics to Science and Ethics.

Additionally, neurodiversity should not hinder the pursuit of knowledge. With appropriate support, every student, including those with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, and other learning differences, can thrive in subjects that inspire them.
Pausing to remember and learn from those who came before us provides grounding and gratitude. Letโ€™s keep their stories alive and encourage our young people to think critically, question, and strive for peace in this world.
