Messages from my client ✨

Claire's little boy (aged 2), was fighting bedtime, and always climbing in to Mum and Dad's bed through the night. She was worried about him disturbing his older sister, so did what she could for an easy life. However, over time things were no longer working for them as a family so she reached out to me. We made some tweaks to his daytime routine and planned a sleep training method that would help overcome these issues.

Now Claire and her partner have their evenings back together, and like she says above; family life is that bit calmer and nicer. 🌙

Early Wakings ⏰✨

What we could consider an early waking for a baby is between 4am and 6am, anything before this would be treat as night wake, and after 6am, well I'm afraid to say that is just waking for the day!

Early wakings are so common and one of the main reasons is your little ones sleep pressure is much lower in the morning, so external factors like light and noise can cause them to wake.

Other factors to consider is their daytime routine, are they getting too much daytime sleep, and potentially are ready to drop a nap or shorten it? Or could it be that they aren't getting enough daytime sleep. Babies need a certain amount of sleep in a 24 hour period relative to their age, if they aren't getting enough their cortisol levels will be much higher and can cause early wakes.

Developmental milestones and also the dreaded teething can impact babies sleep, in which case you'll need to "Ride the Wave". Try and maintain your routine despite the disruption.

If you are struggling with early wakings, please send me a DM, Whatsapp or email and let's talk about how I can help you in a FREE Discovery Call 🌙✨

As I've had a lot of new followers lately, I thought I best reintroduce myself...

👋 Hello, I’m Becky, a Certified Infant Sleep Consultant based in Derbyshire. I completed my training during maternity leave in March 2024 with the amazing Dani & Chris at 🏆

I’m a Mum of two: Lilah, who is 3.5 years old and had no sleep issues, and Ozzy, who is almost 11 months now and presented more challenges. Ozzy’s sleep journey led me to discover the fascinating world of infant sleep, and that’s when Fairy Sleep Mama was born ✨

My mission is to help families achieve their unique sleep goals. Having personally experienced the effects of sleep deprivation, I understand its impact on relationships and daily functioning.

Key Signs your little one is ready to transition to a big girl or big boy bed:

✨ They have started climbing out of their cot.
✨ They have outgrown their cot.
✨ They are expressing a desire for a bed.

When toddlers have outgrown their cot or express a desire for a bed, this usually means they are probably ready emotionally and physically for the change.
However, when a child is climbing out of their cot, this can be more challenging as emotionally they may not be ready for the transition, yet physically you have no choice for safety reasons.
Most make the change between ages 2 and 3. My little girl was actually just over 3 when she got her big girl bed. We were very lucky that she never climbed out, and so when we needed her cot for her little brother, she was emotionally ready for the transition, which made it much smoother.
At 3 years old, toddlers impulse control and emotional maturity have really started to develop more, which is important when you are wanting them to stay in their bed without getting out all of the time!

Smooth Transition Tips:

🌙 Gradual Transition: Start by having your child take naps in the toddler bed to get used to it before transitioning to nighttime sleep.
🌙 Consistent Routine: Toddlers thrive on routine, so maintaining a consistent bedtime routine can ease the transition.
🌙 Excitement: Make the transition exciting by involving your child in choosing bedding or letting them pick their favourite teddy to stay with them in the bed.
🌙 Patience: Be patient during the adjustment period. Rushing the transition can make it harder for your child to adapt.

Remember that each child is different, and there’s no rush to move out of the cot. Prioritise safety and follow your child’s cues to ensure a smooth transition to the toddler bed. 🛌✨

Toddler Tip- "No Surprises"✨

As parents, we all know that managing a toddler’s bedtime can sometimes feel like navigating a maze. The struggle is real! But fear not—I’ve got a simple yet effective tip that can make bedtime smoother and more predictable for both you and your little one.

“Predictability” is the magic word here. Toddlers thrive on routine. When they know what to expect, it reduces anxiety and helps them transition from playtime to bedtime with less fuss. So, what’s the secret sauce? Communication!🌙

Before the bedtime rush begins, take a moment to sit down with your toddler. Explain the evening routine in a way they can understand. For instance:

“Lilah, after dinner, we’ll have a bath at half-past six. Then, it’s story time—your favourite part! Finally, it’s Night Nights.”

By giving them a heads-up, you’re setting expectations. Toddlers appreciate this, even if they can’t express it. They’ll feel more secure knowing what’s coming next.

Life happens, and routines can shift. Maybe you have a special event or need to adjust the schedule. No worries! Just communicate the change to your little one.

🌙 Toddlers dislike surprises—especially when they’re having fun playing or watching their favourite show. Suddenly interrupting their fun for a bath? Cue the protests! By preparing them in advance, you’ll encounter fewer meltdowns. 🌙

It's a common misconception that pushing your baby's bedtime later will result in a later wake up in the morning. Here's why:

🌙 Sleep Needs Remain Consistent: Babies need a certain amount of sleep each day, and those needs are largely consistent. Even if your baby goes to bed later, their internal sleep clock might still wake them up at the same time, leaving them short of overall sleep.

🌙 Overtiredness: Keeping your baby up too late can lead to overtiredness, making it harder for them to fall asleep and stay asleep. It's a classic case of less sleep causing more wake-ups during the night. If you do wish to push bedtime later as part of an early wakings strategy, you either need to push naps later too or add in an extra nap. This way you are keeping the same optimal wake window from the final nap to bedtime.

🌙 Quality of Sleep Matters: Babies tend to experience deeper and more restorative sleep during the earlier part of the night. Pushing bedtime much later might mean they are missing some key restorative sleep.

Instead of focusing on a later bedtime, try these tips to encourage a full night's sleep:

✨Establish a consistent bedtime routine.
✨Ensure your baby naps well during the day
✨Optimise the wake window between final nap and bedtime.
✨Help your baby learn to self-settle.

Remember, every baby is unique, and finding the right sleep routine takes some trial and error. If you need some extra help or would like some guidance, send me a DM and let’s have a chat. 🌙
