Graduate Schools want to know how your presence will be felt on their campus. Emphasize activities and leadership roles in which you will continue to participate!

If you have plans to apply to graduate school, whenever possible, visit the schools, meet program directors and faculty, and sit in on as many classes related to your subject as possible. This shows your genuine interest and creates valuable relationships which will be noted by admissions officers.

Here's a tip for all future graduate school applicants: Personally enlist your references and give each one a short bio of your activities, accomplishments, and anything relevant they need to know. Include a reference form if the grad school supplies one, with a stamped, addressed envelope for each college or university to which your reference is writing to. Always follow up with a written thank you note!

Take risks, try new activities, join after school clubs. Colleges pay attention to what you do outside of class, and whether you’ve taken any leadership roles. If your school doesn’t offer an activity you are interested in, show initiative and form a new club, if possible.

Grades count so get into the habit of studying hard for tests and doing every assignment on time. If you are having difficulty with a subject, talk to your counselor. He or she will have a list of tutors or teachers who will be able to help. And if you feel stuck while writing papers, master the tactics to banish writer’s block.

Here's a tip: Read your personal statement aloud. At this point, you have become too familiar with the words in your personal statement. When you read it aloud, you will be able to hear the essay in a more objective way. Pay attention to it’s rhythm, tone, and style. Read it aloud to others, notice their reactions and jot down their comments.
