Sutemi-waza (捨身技)
means “sacrifice techniques” in Japanese martial arts like Judo. The person throwing gives up their own stable balance or posture—often by dropping to the mat or side—to use the opponent’s momentum and weight to bring them down.Classification of Sutemi-WazaSacrifice throws split into two main groups based on how the thrower drops:

Sui Ryu (Rear/Supine Sacrifice):
The thrower falls straight back onto their back while pulling or launching the opponent over their head.

Yoko shiho nagare (Side Sacrifice): The thrower drops sideways or laterally to the mat, redirecting the opponent’s momentum to the front/side/rear

The calligraphy reads (hopefully)

The large central character is:

武 (Bu) — Martial, the Martial Way, or Warrior Spirit.

The inscriptions on either side are well-known classical Japanese quotations.

Right side

人間五十年
下天の内をくらぶれば
夢幻のごとくなり

(Ningen gojū-nen, geten no uchi o kurabureba, mugen no gotoku nari.)

Translation:

“A human life of fifty years—when compared with the age of the heavenly beings—is but a dream, an illusion.”

This famous passage comes from the Noh play Atsumori, and was famously recited by Oda Nobunaga before the Battle of Okehazama. It expresses the Buddhist idea that life is fleeting and impermanent.

一度生を得て
滅せぬ者の
あるべきか

(Ichido sei o ete, messenu mono no, aru beki ka.)

Translation:

“Having once received life, is there anyone who does not perish?”

or more naturally,

“Once born into this world, who can escape death?”

This is another classical Buddhist reflection on the inevitability of death and the impermanence of all living things.

Overall meaning

Together with the central 武 (Bu), the display conveys a traditional warrior philosophy:

* 武 — Walk the martial path.
* Life is impermanent.
* Death comes to all.
* Therefore live and train sincerely, without fear or attachment.
