What does SEMS actually mean for your school?

A quick August check for your school premises:

1️⃣ Switch off what isn’t needed: Power down unused AC units, AV kits and non-essential lighting to keep baseline energy costs low.

2️⃣ Make the most of quieter corridors: Tackle deep cleaning, alarm testing and room safety checks without the usual term-time disruption.

3️⃣ Keep servicing on schedule: Use the quieter period to complete maintenance and servicing while equipment isn’t in daily use.

4️⃣ Coordinate contractor visits: Where practical, group related visits together to reduce disruption and make better use of your time and budget.

Our CEO, Luke Pargeter, recently met a headteacher who believed her school was operating at 10 out of 10. After all, the statutory paperwork was in place, contractor logs were complete, and the latest certificates and condition surveys were all accounted for.

In Luke’s expert opinion, it was more like a 6 out of 10.

That’s because holding the right documents is the starting point, not the finishing line. The difference lies in what happens next: forward planning, risk forecasting, lifecycle budgeting and regular strategic oversight.

As School Estate Management Standards (SEMS) and DfE annual returns put school management under a clearer spotlight, that gap will become much harder for responsible bodies and trust boards to miss.
