“I’d love to retrain… but how am I supposed to fit it around work, children and everything else?”
This is probably one of the most realistic questions you can ask before going back into education as an adult.
Because life doesn’t suddenly stop because you’ve decided to study.
There are still jobs.
School runs.
Clients.
Children.
Appointments.
And approximately 400 other things that need doing every week. 😅
So, let’s be really open about what studying beauty alongside adult life actually looks like.
For many of our qualifications, you’ll need to commit to one session a week in the academy, which is around five hours.
And no, we’re not going to tell you that’s all you need to do.
There’s home study too.
You might be reading, preparing for an online exam, completing assignments or working on your portfolio. At Level 4 in particular, some of those assignments can be pretty substantial.
It is a commitment.
But it doesn’t have to take over your entire life.
The home study can be fitted around your other responsibilities, and we try to be human about what life actually looks like outside the classroom too.
If you need to leave a little earlier for the school run, talk to us.
If you need extra time in the academy to practise, our doors are open throughout the week and we have rooms students can use when they're available.
And for eligible learners accessing an Advanced Learner Loan, financial support towards childcare costs may also be available.
We don't believe in telling adult learners that studying is effortless.
It isn't.
You have to show up. You have to practise. You have to do the work.
But having a job, children or other responsibilities doesn't automatically mean education can't fit into your life.
Sometimes you just need a little flexibility, a lot of communication and people around you who understand that you're a student…
but you're also a human being with a life outside the classroom.

Can we tell you something we’ve noticed about students who come back into education later in life?
They’re often some of the most committed people in the room.
And we have a theory about why.
When you’re 20, it can feel like you have forever to figure everything out.
You can change your mind. Try something else. Come back to it later.
But when someone decides to retrain in their 40s, 50s or beyond, there’s often a completely different energy.
They’ve thought about it.
They know why they’re there.
They turn up.
They get their assignments done.
They ask questions.
They practise.
And they’re hungry to learn.
We were actually talking about this recently and one of us said:
“When you get to a certain age, you start feeling like time isn't on your side, so you think… right, I’m getting this DONE.” 😂
And there’s something in that.
We meet people who worry they'll be the oldest person in the classroom or that they've somehow missed their chance to learn something completely new.
But being older doesn't mean you're starting with less.
You’re bringing decades of life experience with you.
You know how to communicate with people.
You’ve solved problems.
You’ve dealt with difficult situations.
You’ve probably developed more resilience than you give yourself credit for.
And you might also have something your 20-year-old self didn't have yet:
A really clear idea of what you want.
So why would learning have an expiry date?
Some of our most committed students didn't find the career they wanted at 18.
They found it at 40, 50 or later.
And maybe that wasn't late at all.
Maybe that was simply when they were ready for it.

“I don’t look like someone who works in beauty.”
You’d be surprised how many people think this before they ever walk into a beauty classroom.
They picture someone younger.
Perfect skin.
Perfect hair.
Perfect make-up.
Someone who has always known they wanted to work in beauty and seems to have everything figured out.
And then they look at themselves and think…
“I wouldn’t fit in there.”
Maybe you’re in your 40s and wondering if you’ve left it too late.
Maybe you’re a single mum trying to work out how studying could possibly fit around everything else.
Maybe you’re coming out of a divorce and thinking about what you actually want your life to look like now.
Maybe you’ve spent 20 years doing something completely different.
Or maybe beauty is something you’ve quietly wanted to do for years, but you’ve always found a reason why someone like you couldn’t.
One of the things we notice with new students is how much they can judge themselves before anyone else has even had the chance.
They walk into the classroom worrying about how they look.
Whether they’ll be the oldest.
Whether everyone else will know more than them.
Whether they'll fit in.
And then something lovely happens.
They start talking.
They start learning.
They make mistakes.
They realise everyone else is learning too.
They laugh — a lot.
And gradually, all those things that felt so important on day one stop mattering quite so much.
There is no one way to “look” like a beauty therapist.
There is no perfect age to change direction.
And you don't need to arrive looking like you belong.
Sometimes you find that feeling once you're there. ❤️

“Which chemical peel is best?”

It's actually a really difficult question to answer without adding two very important words:

For whom?

Because advanced skin treatments aren't one-size-fits-all.

Before choosing a peel, a practitioner needs to understand the client's skin, concerns, history, current skincare, suitability for treatment and what they're actually hoping to achieve.

Only then can you start thinking about treatment selection.

It's one of the reasons advanced beauty education becomes much more about decision-making.

At Level 4, you're not simply learning how to perform a skin peel.

You're developing the knowledge to understand why you'd choose one approach over another, and when you might decide not to treat at all.

Our regulated Level 4 Skin Peels qualification covers skin analysis, consultation, peel selection, safe application, treatment planning and aftercare through practical training, home study and portfolio work.

Because there's a big difference between knowing the steps of a treatment...
and understanding the skin you're performing it on.

You can usually tell how well someone has been trained by the questions they ask.

A beginner might ask…

“How do I apply lash extensions?”

An experienced lash technician is more likely to ask…

“Should I be applying them at all?”

Because sometimes the right decision isn’t to reach for the tweezers.

It’s recognising that the natural lashes aren’t healthy enough.

It’s spotting a contraindication during the consultation.

It’s choosing the right length and weight so you’re enhancing the natural lashes, not damaging them.

That’s the part people don’t often see.

Lash extensions aren’t just about creating a beautiful set of lashes. They’re about understanding the science behind the treatment and making safe, informed decisions for every client.

That’s why proper training covers so much more than application techniques. It includes consultations, health and safety, lash mapping, isolation, aftercare and everything that helps you become a confident, professional lash technician.

Let's talk about one of the biggest dermaplaning myths…

"Won't the hair grow back thicker?"

No.

Dermaplaning removes fine vellus hair at the surface of the skin. Cutting that hair doesn't change the follicle beneath it or suddenly cause it to produce thicker hair.

But there's another misconception we hear quite a lot:
“Dermaplaning is basically just shaving.”

Professional dermaplaning is primarily an exfoliation treatment.

And although the actual treatment can look relatively simple, there's quite a bit of knowledge sitting behind it.

A practitioner needs to understand skin assessment and contraindications before deciding whether someone is suitable.

Then there's blade control, pressure, angle, skin tension and safe working techniques.

It's why our regulated Level 4 Dermaplaning qualification doesn't only focus on how to perform the treatment. There's practical academy training alongside the underpinning knowledge, home study and portfolio work.

Because with advanced skin treatments, knowing how to do something is only half the story.
