💧🌊Our first year geography and hazard management students braved the weather yesterday to visit a very wet Thurstaston to see coastal erosion in action!

Last night we celebrated Professor Derek France who, after 32 years at the retires today from the department. 

That's not to say you might not see him around, as he retains the status of Professor Emeritus. 

We're sure you will all join us in wishing him all the best in his retirement 🌍

⛰️✍️ As part of the Retracing Footsteps project, Dr Daniel Bos recently visited local schools in North Wales to present them with books containing poetry and sketches they produced about Wales’ most iconic mountain, Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon).

In collaboration with Eryri Park Authority and the Welsh poet and children's author Casia Wiliam, the project team engaged with primary school children to create poetry and drawings reflecting what the mountain means to them, which were subsequently turned into the book 'Yr Wyddfa: I remember...'

Discussing the project, Daniel said: 

“Working closely with the local schools offered a wonderful glimpse into how students engage with the history and poetry found in those books. It was truly inspiring to see how young people today reimagine and perceive the mountain, bringing fresh perspectives to our understanding of this special place.

“It has been particularly rewarding to collaborate with the Eryri National Park Authority in understanding some of the challenges they and local communities face in conserving and protecting the mountain, as well as exploring how creative work can influence and offer new perspectives on the landscape.

“Being able to visit and personally deliver the books to the schools and students was a memorable experience. Seeing the students' faces and the excitement that their poems are now part of a book they can keep and share with their families and friends was especially gratifying.”

This week Dan and Beck from the project team have been experimenting with making wearable bat detectors. Our first prototype was successful (phew!) so we're looking forward to making a batch to use in the project when our neighbourhood bats emerge from hibernation next spring. .citizens
